A worn and damaged cast lead alloy token or tally of post-medieval date. The token if bifacial, having cast motifs on either side. One side depicts a multi-spoked star (or possibly a crude tree) while the other depicts an uncertain design - possibly a sun with rays, or possibly a cock's head. If the latter then this may be a cock-shy token, a gaming piece used in conjunction with a toy lead cockrel. Shy-cocks may have derived from the Shrove Tuesday pursuit of casting stones or cudgels at a live cockerel which was either tied down or buried up to its neck in the ground (Forsyth & Egan…

Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally.

An incomplete cast lead alloy palm guard for a leather worker's palm. The guard is now sub-rectangular in plan and plano-convex in profile. The original shape was probably oval, which is said to suggest that they were moulded in oyster shells. There are two circular depressions or indentations in the upper face of the guard, measuring 11.9mm and 12.2mm diameter, an occurrence that is frequently seen on palm guards. The guard would have been wrapped in leather with holes in it to match the depression in the lead. Bailey (1993) illustrates a similar example on page 65, fig.2, which is d…

A complete and worn post-medieval lead alloy farthing trade token, issued by grocer John Hall of Abingdon probably around AD 1667. The token is cast; the obverse depicts the grocer's arm and the legend (from 12 o'clock) reads: HIS IOHN HALL while the obverse reads FARTHING ABINGDON with the initials I H in the centre. Most copper alloy tokens are better aligned (reading for example IOHN HALL HIS from 12 o'clock). There is no record of John Hall issuing a farthing token in lead or copper alloy, although he did issue a halfpenny copper alloy token in AD 1667 (Norweb 56). Ther…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead alloy plug or vessel mend of uncertain date. In plan the plug has a plano-convex body and on the reverse a short round-necked integrally cast shank with flattened discoidal head. This section would have plugged the hole in a vessel wall (if that is its use). If so then this was a substantial vessel (or the like). Possibly Roman but also possible medieval / post-medieval. The latter seems more likely.
