A worn copper-alloy Rose and Orb jetton of Nuremberg Master Hans Krauwinckel II, c.1586-1635 AD. As Mitchiner, 1988: no. 1494. Obverse: *DAS WORT GOTES BLEIBTEWICK, Three crowns and three lis arranged centrifugally around a central rose, within an inner circle. Reverse: *HANNS KRAVWINCKEL IN NVRNB, An Imperial orb surmounted by a cross pattee within a double stranded trefoil, all within an inner circle.

The jetton depicts a Lion rampant in shield / triple stranded cross fleuretty design as issued by Flanders Louis de Male, Count of Flanders in 1346-1384 AD (Mitchiner 784). The jetton has been folded in half, probably post deposition.

The obverse appears to show a lion. The reverse shows a normal orb with a cross patty on top, in a three arched tressure. Cf. Mitchiner pp.360-1, section 3.

A Medieval complete copper alloy French Jetton. The obverse depicts a large crown containing three small quatrefoil jewels. The surrounding legend is unclear due to wear but appears to read *[...]VE[...]M[...]GR[...]EA. The reverse depicts a cross of three strands fleur-de-lis and fleuronnee with a central quatrefoil, enclose by a tressure of four arches. The surrounding legend is illegible due to wear. A similar example can be seen in Barnard, p.121, no.70, plate VII.

The jetton is of a type Mitchiner calls an English groat type jetton, but which are in the Salisbury catalogue as early French or Italian (sometimes called Lombard jettons). It is similar to those in Salisbury (cf. Mernick and Algar 2001, 252; refs. 1-7) - late 13th century to mid 14th century.
