Four red-slip coated ceramic base sherds. Fine orange/brown coloured fabric. Roman. In "Roman Samian Pottery in Britain", Paul Webster (1996) notes that red-slip coated samian ware, made mainly in Gaul and Germany, was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to the mid 3rd centuries. Webster also points out that the Gaulish Samian tradition is but one branch of a widespread Roman red-slipped tradition, which did not stop with Gallic samian production, and that samian forms and fabrics were imitated by some British potteries.

Cast copper-alloy trumpet brooch. Roman period (c.AD75-175). Mass: 10.7g; length: 47.7mm; width: 15.7mm; depth: 19.0mm. The incomplete “trumpet-shaped” head is sub-oval in plan with a small projection at the top (from which the now missing separate head-loop would have projected). The reverse of the head is concave, with an incomplete lug and a hook on a median rib, which would have secured the spring and pin mechanism.
