A incomplete iron whittle-tanged knife. Length: 22.7cm; width: 5.5cm; thickness: 7.1mm (tang); mass: 144.2g. Triangular sectioned blade. The knife has a cutting edge which rises to meet the back which is angled slightly down. The blade is missing its tip and there has been some loss of material from the cutting edge. The tang tapers to a point. The knife has a heavily pitted grey surface which has been extensively cleaned to remove much of the corrosion. Dating is difficult. Whittle-tang knives were used in the medieval and post-medieval periods (e.g. see Margeson, “Norwich …

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete forged iron arrowhead, probably medieval in date. The wings form a leaf shape when viewed in plan. It is clear from one blade that there are distinct narrow inwardly curved tapering barbs, at least 11.6mm in length, although these are now rather indistinct due to corrosion and having been bent inwardly towards the socket (and laterally). There is an incomplete socket at the base of the arrowhead which tapers and becomes indistinct towards the upper portion of the barbs. In section, the socket is circular and the wings appear to be very slightly lentoid. The arrowhead …
