Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lithic scraper, probably Late Neolithic to Early Bronze age c. BC 3300 - 2000. The bulbar end exhibits a clear bulb of percussion with light radiating ripple marks extending partway down the partly incurvate ventral surface. The dorsal surface has a small section of the cortex in situ and the surface is heavily faceted with random flaking. The edge has bifacial fine and coarse retouch and probable further damage/fritting from its time in the ground. The material is a mottled grey/cream flint with small white inclusions with further iron oxide elements. The small black surface markin…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A broad tertiary debitage / blade flake c. 4500 - 3000 BC. The lithic is broadly leaf shaped in a pale grey chert. There is a modest platform with a percussion bulb and bulbar scar at the top of the ventral surface, which then has a slightly undulating surface to the distal end. The dorsal face has a pair of converging ridges with conchoidal ripple marks to their centre. The edges have no clear deliberate input to form a scrapper/blade although that which has the look of scaled retouch, is likely to be from its time in the ground. Some intervention to form a blade/scrapper can't be ru…

A late Neolithic to early Bronze Age backed blade or knife c. 2500 - 2000 BC. Formed on a broadly triangular cross section tertiary flake, the material is a pale brown/grey chert with large inclusions of a pale cream material. The ventral face has a modest bulb of percussion, much remove by a large bulbar scar. The remainder of the ventral surface has the characteristic ripples running down the full length of the blade. The dorsal face has a pair of converging ridges that combine into a single ridge running to the distal end. The concave upper edge of the blade has abrupt retouch, …

County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A blunt nosed lithic scraper from a secondary flake, probably later Neolithic to early Bronze age c. 2500 - 1500 BC. The scrapper looks to be formed on a reused, or reworked waste flake and or debitage of chert/flint. Roughly an hourglass in plan with large double mesial notches and broad in section, it is formed on an opaque dull grey chert, with modest amounts of off-white staining and a large section of cortex to the dorsal surface. The lithic has large reworked hollow scrappers to either side that may be deliberate reworking for stripping things like bark from arrowheads and or, s…

A complete Post-Medieval knapped chert, gun-flint c. 1600 - 1850 AD. The flint is close to a perfect square, typically flat to the ventral side with the topmost dorsal side knapped into a wedge form with numerous flake scars. Viewed from the side, it forms an irregular polygon. The material is a grey chert with irregular small white angular inclusions. It measures 20.2mm x 19.32mm and 0.9mm deep, weighing 4.2gm.

The ventral surface has a distinct bulb of percussion beneath the striking platform, to the proximal end. The dorsal surface has significant negative scaring and subsequent arrises. One worked edge has a semi denticulate retouch with the opposite edge being smoother in form. There is an element of bifacial retouch to one quarter. Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Late Neolithic flint Plano-convex oblique arrowhead, probably dating to c. 2700 - 2400 BC. Worked from a tertiary flake of opaque white/cream flint. The arrowhead is broadly triangular in plan with straight edges and a concave basal edge that has been thinned to accommodate hafting of the item. There is clear edge retouch to the dorsal side with some evidence of further modest retouch to the ventral surface, although damage due to erosion in situ is also a likely cause. The arrowhead has a pale cream/grey appearance with numerous natural inclusions.

A lithic, secondary sub-triangular flake with retouch to both long edges. The dorsal surface has numerous negative scars/arrises running roughly from the proximal to distal end. The ventral surface is smooth but for some fracture scars at the distal point that looks to have been broken away in antiquity. This implement may be considered as a scraper but, whilst the proximal end does have some evidence of basal thinning, it does not in itself look sufficient to have made hafting an easy task. Alternatively it may have been intended to be a trnasverse arrowhead. Dating is difficult; Neo…

A lithic object that appears at firast glance to be a tanged and barbed arrowhead of Late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500-1800 BC), however on closer inspection this appears to be a flake, of probable Brone Age date, however without the attributes of a retouched arrowhead; either this is a beginnings of an arrowhead lost or discarded before completion or it is just a flake that resembles an arrowhead in plan.

A modestly retouched flint flake of general prehistoric date, but probably Neolithic or Bronze Age in date (c. 4000-1400 BC). Plano-convex in form, the dorsal surface has a single ridge running from just behind the distal point to the proximal end. The ventral surface is smooth apart from a modest percussion wave and some slight flaking. There are signs of retouch to both the left and right hand distal edges. This implement is modestly worked, sufficient to make it practically useful. The surface is a mottled grey with inclusions and ferrous like staining, some of the crazing/chips…

A triangulate worked flint blade of Neolithic origin (3500-2100BC). The ventral surface has a small bulb of percussion with faint trace of the percussion ripples across the surface. The dorsal side has a single lateral edge/dorsal ridge, running the length of the blade with dorsal scarring along much of its length. The cutting edge is formed on the slightly convex side with direct parallel retouch, some of which looks to have been damaged through the passage of time.
