Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy belt mount or horse harness decoration of probable 17th century date. Parallels can be found in B. Read; 2001; Metal Artefacts of Antiquity; pp. 29 and 37, nos. 331-334. The mount appears to have been designed to represent an acorn. The wide bottom (shell) section has a horizontal ridge along its top edge and is decorated with a series of vertical grooves. The narrower (acorn) section above also contains these vertical grooves and terminates at the top in a horizontal ridge and rounded knob. A circular knob also protrudes from the underside of the shell section. The r…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy composite strap-end of medieval date. Several examples of such strap-ends have been found in late 13th to early 15th century levels in London (G. Egan and F. Pritchard; 1991; pp. 140-146). The piece represents the upper plate from a composite strap end. It is sub-rectangular in plan, tapering slightly towards the bottom, where it is damaged. The top edge is scalloped, whilst on the slightly convex upper surface, incised zig-zag lines have been used to form the letter 'M' - probably for 'Maria' - which is aligned on the strap-end's longest axis. Close to the top edge i…

A corroded copper-alloy buckle of medieval date. This example of a Disc-on-pin annular buckle probably dates from the 12th to 15th century AD. The object is circular in plan, with a bar dividing it in half. The pin is looped around a thinner section of the frame, and the point rests on the opposite side of the frame. The central section of the pin consists of a circular plate with an empty circular cell at the centre. All parts of the buckle have remaining traces of gilding. The object measures 21.7mm long and wide, and 3.9mm thick. Weight is 5.7g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval spur buckle of suggested mid 13th to late 14th/early 15th century date (R. Whitehead; 1996; pp. 34). The incomplete frame is of unusual form in that it appears possibly to have had an openwork cell at the mid point of the outer edge. Other than this unusual feature, the frame is roughly oval and has an angled ridge at the three surviving 'corners'. The frame tapers into the much narrower integral plate. The width of the plate narrows towards the end, where it terminates in a point. One third of the way along from the frame is a wider sub-oval moulding with a vertical ridge…

Half of a late Roman to early Early-medieval copper-alloy buckle; Hawkes and Dunning type IIA (1961; pp. 50-57). The piece represents the right hand side of a zoomorphic buckle which would probably originally have been symmetrical in form. At the apex is an inward-facing head, probably of a stylised dolphin. An eye is represented by a single ring-and-dot punch mark and there is a crest on top of the head. The front edge of the face marks the point where the break occurred. Just above halfway down the outer edge is a second, larger crest, which maybe a fin or, alternatively, could be…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An open-ended gilt copper-alloy ring of possible late Early-medieval date. There is much debate as to the function and date of these artefacts. They are thought by some to be ear-rings; however, the thickness of the terminals would seem to make them unsuitable for this purpose and a more likely explanation is that they are finger-rings. Similar gilt finger-rings have been described as Anglo-Scandinavian, although the recorder knows of no examples from securely dated contexts. The object has been cast in one piece and consists of a squashed (originally) circular hoop. The body is of …

A probable copper-alloy knife handle of Roman to Post-Medieval date. The object consists of a rectangular block which tapers to a point at the top and has a slit in the underside. This slit extends approximately half way up and contains a piece of the corroded iron blade. It seems likely that the original length of the handle was significantly greater than that of the present artefact. The object measures 37.3mm long, 11.7mm wide and 8mm thick. It weighs 14.2g.

Slightly corroded cast copper alloy pin of Roman to medieval date. The pin has flattened conical head decorated with series of deep grooves which radiate outwards from the central point.
