A copper-alloy belt mount or horse harness decoration of probable 17th century date. Parallels can be found in B. Read; 2001; Metal Artefacts of Antiquity; pp. 29 and 37, nos. 331-334. The mount appears to have been designed to represent an acorn. The wide bottom (shell) section is separated from the rest by a horizontal groove. The narrower (acorn) section above also contains a horizontal groove and terminates at the top in a horizontal groove and rounded knob. A circular knob probably also protruded from the underside of the shell section, but it has now broken off. The reverse is…

Worn and corroded copper-alloy mount in the form of a figure with blue champlevé enamel eyes, holding a stylised book, with two apertures (on body) and a stud at the rear of the head for attachment. The figure also retains traces of gilding. The object has been somewhat distorted, probably pre-deposition, when it was removed from its original setting. This mount was probably made in the late 12th-13th century. On stylistic grounds it would be attributed to the great manufacturing centre of Limoges, France. The figure dipicts what is usually described as a "saint" or perhaps an "…

A bent and incomplete copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. Read illustrates a similar artefact, which he describes as a sword-belt mount of possible 16th century date (2001; pp. 43, no. 371). However, the bottom element of this piece differs significantly from that of the Read example and may indicate that this piece served a different function. The object is of thin section and would orginally have been flat. It has a circular aperture flanked on either side by a three-lobed border. Immediately above and below this section is a narrower 'waisted' section, each containing the h…

Worn and corroded Post-Medieval copper-alloy hooked mount of circa 16th century AD date. The top of the mount has a circular swelling, with a rivet hole, and then tapers into a bent tip. The body is roughly straight, with some irregularities, and there is a second rivet hole parallel with the top of the hook. The curve of the hook is relatively narrow, and then widens into an inverted drop-shape. The object measures 39.1mm high, 9.8mm deep and 6.1mm thick. It weighs 1.7g.

An unidentified copper-alloy object. No parallel could be found for this piece, but the general form and decoration suggest that it may be a mount from an early Early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) bucket (see J.M.Cook; 2004). The object is pelta-shaped, the extension at the top having been broken off. It is thin in secion and has a slight curvature, which may be original or the result of post-depositional damage. There is a small rivet hole at the centre and, on the reverse, evidence of an adhesive paste or solder. At the centre of the broken top edge is a cross-shaped arrangement of ring-…

A copper-alloy mount of probable late medieval date. This form of mount (probably a belt decoration) is a common find. The style may be derived from a series of mounts in the form of a crowned head (see, for example, BH-5BE6A3), which probably date from the 14th century AD. The mount is sub-oval in plan, tapering to a sub-rectangular protrusion at the bottom. It has a convex upper surface and concave underside. The top half is decorated by a number of deep cross-hatched grooves, bordered at the bottom by a horizontal groove. The lower section has two or three further horizontally-al…

A corroded copper-alloy bar mount of circa 1350-1400 AD date (parallels found in B.Read, 2001, p.24; G. Egan and F. Pritchard, 1991, p. 221). The mount has a backwards facing hook that attaches around a separate suspended ring. The hook is flat throughout, but widens towards the top. There is a possible rivet hole near the top of the hook. The object measures 24.9mm high, 7.9mm wide, and 6mm thick. It weighs 1.5g.

A corroded copper-alloy mount of probable 13th or 14th century AD date. No exact parallel could be found for this piece but its general form suggests it may be a casket mount. At the bottom is a rectangular plate, which has been pierced with at least two (possibly three) rivet holes. An elongated sub-rectangular protrusion extends upwards from the rectangular plate. It narrows towards the (possibly broken) tip and contains two small copper-alloy rivets. The object measures 44mm high, 14.6mm wide, and 5.4mm thick. It weighs 5.4g. The surface retains traces of silver but no other …
