A copper-alloy horse harness pendant of probable 14th century date (see N. Griffiths; 1986; pp. 1). The pendant takes the form of a spade-shield decorated with a heraldic device. The device has a crude lion facing, with the tail curving over its back. The lion occupies the space from the fess point upwards, and below it is a charge of fretty pattern. Around the edges of the shield runs a wavy line. The hanger is located centrally, set at a right angle to the upper edge of the pendant. It has a central aperture which has corroded open at the top. The reverse of the pendant is plain. …

A corroded, bent and incomplete copper-alloy horse harness pendant of 12th to 14th century AD date (N. Griffiths; 1986; pp.1). This small pendant has a roughly circular plate and an integral hanger. The upper surface of the plate has remains of decoration on it, possibly heraldic, but the details are so worn that it is not possible to identify them further. The hanger is set at ninety degrees to the top of the plate and survives in good condition. There is a hole at the centre of the plate. The reverse is undecorated. The object measures 38.7mm wide, 38.8mm high and 1.7mm thick. …

A heavily corroded copper-alloy heraldic horse harness pendant of probable 14th century date (N. Griffiths; 1986; pp. 1). The object consists of a rectangular plate and the hanger. This plate is heavily corroded rendering the design nigh indecipherable, but the image seems to be a six-petalled flower. The reverse is undecorated. The hanger is set at right angles to the plate. It is flat, has rounded edges, and a small circular hole which, due to wear, has become elongated at the top. The plate retains traces of red colour and gilding. The object measures 33.9mm high, 20.5mm wide an…

A copper-alloy horse harness pendant with attached suspension mount. Dates from the 12th to 14th century AD (N. Griffths; 1987; pp. 1-4). Both the suspension mount and the pendant are circular in plan and have identical decoration on the upper surfaces. This decoration is best seen on the unbent pendant section and takes the form of an incised six-pointed star surrounded by a pattern of small, closely-spaced punched circles. A domed circular rivet sits within a hole at the centre of the pendant and is held in place by a circular stop on the reverse. The surface of the pendant and susp…

A copper-alloy horse harness pendant of probable 13th or 14th century AD date. The object is a Griffiths type 2a shield-shaped pendant (Griffiths, 1986, p.3, fig. 2a). The upper surface of the shield-shaped plate has traces of red enamel on it, indicating that it used to display some kind of heraldic image. The hanger projects from the centre of the upper edge at a ninety degree angle, narrows towards to tip, and the loop is flattened, with half of it broken off. The object measures 35.2mm high, and 22.3mm wide. It weighs 5.9g.

An incomplete medieval copper-alloy horse harness pendant of probable 13th of 14th century AD date. While quatrefoil harness pendants tend to display a heraldic image at the centre of the pendant (J. Clark, 1995, p. 66, Nos 65-66), the object in question merely outlines the quatrefoil. The quatrefoil frame of the pendant remains intact and in good condition with some corrosion, but no hanger remains. The object measures 19.9mm high, 18.2 mm wide, and 2.2mm thick. The weight is 1.3g.
