Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Complete copper alloy double sheet strap end, dating to the Medieval period. This strap end consists of two narrow, long tongue-shaped plates, which taper to a point, with one circular rivet connecting the plates together near the wider straight edge. It is unclear from the images if this example is cast or beaten from copper sheet. This rivetted connection would have connected the strap end to a belt. There is no distinctive decoration, although there are two slight ridges running the length of the top surface which could be due to the pinching together of the plates to create the st…

Medieval copper alloy sheet sexfoil mount. The mount has a high domed centre with a circular hole through it, slightly off centre, for the seperate rivet. The six lobed petals are raised with indents between and the edge is shaped to the curved outer edges of the petals. The tip of one petal is lost to an old break or original mistake with manufacture. The rivet is formed of a short lengh of copper alloy circular sectioned wire with the top flattened flush with the front of the mount. Egan and Pritchard (1993) illustrate a range of flower mounts made of copper alloy sheet, p.186-19…

A silver coin made into a button. Paul Cannon suggests: From the image this appears to be a fractional silver unit of a rupee from the Indian Princely State of Hyderabad. The weight is not recorded, but from the diameter it is probably a ΒΌ rupee denomination. The coin was struck during the reign of Mir Mahmud Ali Khan II (AH 1285-1329 = AD 1868-1911). Like other rulers of Hyderabad he used the name of the founder of the dynasty ie 'Asaf Jah' who ruled AD 1724-1748 on his coins. The only indication of the true issuer of the coin is a single 'mim' (m) in the centre of the obv…

Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops which are D-shaped in section with flat backs and slightly widened outer sides. The strap bar is plain and the pin is missing. A similar example is illustrated in Margeson (1993:30, no.164) from a 17th century context, although with an incised line for a pin rest in the centre of each loop, it is likely similar simple forms were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Pritchard 1993:22, 82-3, cf no.332).
