Object type: PADLOCK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy barrel lock, probably for a casket. The lock has a heptagonal sectioned barrel with the remains of two arms on the upper surface, one at each end. At one end of the barrel is the key aperture and at the other, a lead plug. Originally the spring mechanism of the lock would have been here, so the plug is probably a later repair or alteration.

Scandinavian copper alloy disc brooch. The brooch is decorated with an openwork Jellinge-style design of an interlacing animal (see NMS-7446E3 and ESS-4D7A85 for other examples of this style). On the reverse there are the remains of the pin lug and catchplate. The pin is missing. There is also part of the suspension loop which the wearer could have passed a chain through to wear the brooch as a pendant. Jane Kershaw has identified this as Scandinavian - a Jellinge-style disc brooch, Jansson Type I A1 (Jansson in Arwidsson1984; Kershaw 2009). There is a close parallel from Cambridge…

Medieval copper alloy foot from a vessel. The foot is in the form of a four-toed lion's paw. Most similar examples have a steep or vertical incline up the leg, but this object has a shallow angle. This indicates that the vessel would have been held a short distance above the ground, and suggests an early date for the piece.
