A tiny silver ingot, comprising a sub-rectangular bar, of rectangular cross-section, with hammer facets visible on all four lightly concave faces. The ends are complete and rounded. Date: uncertain. The form and general appearance of the object are insufficiently diagnostic to demonstrate a date of more than 300 years old. Therefore, the object does not qualify as Treasure under the terms of the 1996 Treasure Act.

Circumstances: Found while searching with a metal detector between September 2009 and March 2010. The coins were found in a close area, this area had previously yielded six denarii of similar date, undoubtedly part of the same hoard (2009 T295). Description: Eleven Roman silver denarii. The earliest are two worn specimens of the second half of the first century, the others of later date, mainly belonging to the Severan dynasty. With the six earlier coins they form a discrete group in terms of date and denomination and there seems no doubt that they represent part of a dispersed hoar…

Description: A clipped silver siliqua of the emperor Valentinian II (Roman Imperial Coinage IX, 43 or 57, AD375 - 83) which has been drilled with a central hole, transforming it into a pendant or, more probably, a mount. The use of Roman coins as belt mounts in late Roman and early Saxon contexts is well attested; this appears to represent another example of such a practice. Date: 375 - 83, re-use late 4th or early 5th century. Dimensions: Diameter 13.5mm, weight 0.69g. A single coin would not normally qualify as treasure, but since the coin has been adapted for use as a pendant…

Thin gold ring, the band misshapen, with plain exterior, the interior inscribed: 'Piety the best monument', with maker's mark TS in a rectangle. It has not proved possible to identify the maker's mark from available sources, and as this is a type which goes on into the second quarter of the 18th century, there is not enough evidence to confirm a pre-1708 date.

Two silver hollow hemispherical elements, each with a central hole. Each side is incised with a leaf or floral design which continues from one side to the other, and the pieces fit together to show how they were originally joined to form a hemisphere pierced at either side. The function of this object is not clear. Possibly the remains of a button, in which the loop, now missing, had a shank which joined both elements with a knop at the end. Otherwise perhaps a decorative dress fitting sewn onto a garment? The etched design suggests a roughly 16th-17th Century date. As such, due…

Silver-gilt mount, basically triangular form with two leaf-shaped elements along one edge meeting at a point; pierced design with two openings, the larger one apparently for attachment to another to form a clasp. Ridged bar below. On the back two studs for attachment to textile or leather. The form of this mount or fitting suggests it may have been part of a clasp of which one piece is now missing. If this interpretation is correct it might be part of a bookbinding clasp or dress fitting, but its function remains uncertain. There is very little to go on in terms of dating but it …

I have examined a silver object found at Mattishall, Norfolk. It is a silver mark of Frederik II, King of Denmark and Norway (1559-88), dated 1563 and weighing 7.21g (ref: Hede p. 11, no. 9). Normally, single coins are only eligible to be considered as Treasure if they have been converted into jewellery. This piece survives in a worn and battered state, rendering it substantially underweight for the issue, but there is no sign that it has ever been used as jewellery. In my opinion, therefore, is does not constitute Treasure according to the terms of the Act.
