Complete but weathered lithic implement of Neolithic date. The flint has been categorised as a leaf shaped knife. There is extensive invasive retouch on both faces. Abrupt retouch along the sides, to form the cutting edge, can also be seen but the item has suffered considerably from post-depositional damage. One face of the knife is notably more smoothed with pitting and slight iron staining as if this side of the item has suffered exposure to the elements. Overall the flint has a creamy beige-grey patina. The knife is dated broadly to the Neolithic period c.3500-2100 BC.

Lithic Implement/Debitage: A single tertiary debitage flake (with only a tiny area cortex remaining) possibly reworked into a scraper. Traces of abrupt retouch are notable along one edge of the flake but due to more recent damage it is not possible to say for certain if the flake was reworked into a tool, such as a scraper. The flint is of a near opaque greyish-brown colour. Dated to the Neolithic, c.3500 BC to 2100 BC. Please see other records from this area for associated finds, including tools, flakes and debitage.

Lithic Implement: Near complete small flint probable discoidal knife of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. Due to peripheral damage it is not possible to confidently identify this implement but it appears to be too thick for use as a leaf-shaped arrowhead and therefore discoidal knife is the present preferred interpretation. The implement is D-shaped in section and there is extensive invasive retouch on both faces but moreso on the convex face than on the flatter face. The flint has a deep grey-brown patina. Dated to the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, c.2500 BC to 1500 B…

Lithic Assemblage: 11 pieces of struck flint. These pieces are referred to as debitage as they have not been modified further in order to produce specific tools. The majority of the pieces consists of tertiary removals (with very little or no outer cortext remaining), this material primarily consists of flakes. The remainder of the debitage consists of 3 secondary, and possibly one primary removal fragment, with more extensive cortex coverage and with the removals being notably thicker and less uniform in shape and size suggesting that these removals formed part of the preparation st…

Lithic Implement: A single chunky blade fragment or possibly part of a multi-platform core. The blade has not had any retouching along the edges but scars of earlier removals are evident running at a diagonal angle across one of the faces which suggests a change in knapping direction. The flint is a mottled pale creamy beige-grey in colour. The patina of this flint is notably different to other pieces of flint, dated to the Neolithic, recorded from the same site. Dated to the late Mesolithic, c.6500 to c.3500 BC. Please see other records from this area, mostly believed to be of …

Lithic Implement: Incomplete possible end scraper of probable Neolithic date. The flake, from which the tool is made is a secondary flake with cortex covering one of the sides, more recent damage may have removed further areas of cortex and the tool does not appear to be complete. The probable scraping edge clearly has fine retouch although due to more recent damage this area is incomplete hence the difficulty in categorising this artefact as a specific tool. The tool does have the classic negative scar on the distal face, where the thumb would sit in order to apply pressure during us…

Lithic Implement: Incomplete small flint scraper of probable Neolithic, possibly Mesolithic, date. The flake, from which the scraper is made is a secondary flake with extensive cortex covering the dorsal face. The scraping edge is created with a series of semi-abrupt removals in a U-shaped arrangement although due to more recent damage this scraping edge is incomplete. The flint is semi-translucent and has a grey-brown patina. Small scrapers, sometimes termed disc, button or thumbnail scrapers due to their form and micro-scrapers due to their size, have been dated to both the Mesoli…

Lithic Implement: Complete serrated blade (denticulate) or knife of late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The tool has retouch on both lateral edges, which is not typical of serrated blades, but may have assisted in the hafting process. The edges are notably retouched in contrasting ways with one edge having more invasive serrated retouch (the cutting edge) and the opposing edge having less invasive abrupt retouch (possibly the hafting edge). both the proximal and distal ends of the flake also exhibit some retouch. This, however, is less complete at the distal end which still bears…

Lithic Implement: Complete worked flint blade of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date (8300-2100 BC). The flint is mottled dark grey and mid grey in colour with patches of white marbling and small superficial flaws. It is a tertiary flake with no cortex remaining, there are 5 vertical flake removals evident on the dorsal face. The ventral face still has the bulb of percussion and ripples from the striking process. There is a notable flaw in the flint about half way down the ventral aspect. Complete but peripherally damaged lithic implement. It is a worked flint blade of later Mesolithic date. The implement has been modified to serve several purposes with a cutting edge along one side, a pointed, burin, end for use in scoring or puncturing, and a notched edge with at least two, possibly three notches for stripping things perhaps bark or small bones. It is worth noting that there is cortex on the exterior end of the blade, and that the top of the blade is snapped removing striking platform/bulb of percussion. These features indicate that the orignal core, from which thi…

Lithic Implement: Complete Neolithic flint scraper. The tool has been formed from a secondary flake with cortex remaining on the right-hand side of the dorsal surface. The ventral surface has retained a prominent bulb of percussion and has the characteristic radiating ripples. The right and distal edges have abrupt retouching and the left edge has semi-abrupt retouching. The flint has a deep orange-brown patina. Although such tools probably had varied uses they are commonly linked to the process of stripping animal skins. The tool has been dated broadly to the Neolithic period c.3…

Lithic Implement: Complete flint scraper of Neolithic date. The implement has been formed from a flint flake and the flat striking platform, bulb of percussion and ripples are notable. The distal end of the flake is still covered in cortex and the semi-abupt re-touch to create the scraper edge is along one edge only. The flint has a milky grey-brown patina. Scraper tools will have had a variety of uses although the most common suggestion is for cleaning skins. This scraper has been dated c. 2500 BC-1000 BC.

Worked flint implement of Neolithic date. The tool created from a flake of pale blue-grey flint has evidence of working at three points along its perimeter. The lower edge of the flake has had a combination of invasive and semi-abrupt retouch to create a piercer whilst both edges of the flake have had abrupt retouching to create scrapers. Tools of this type are dated to the Neolithic (3500-2100 BC).

A single lithic flake, of chert rather than flint. The flake has a distinct striking platform and bulb of percussion with cortex remaining on the dorsal surface. There are potential traces of minor abrupt removals (retouch) along the edges but post-depositional damage prevents certain identification of this as a tool. Due to the undiagnostic nature of this item it has been broadly dated from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic c.8300BC-2100BC. A single-edged flint scraper formed from a thick flake of Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date. The core that the flake was struck from had evidently been worked in two directions with the dorsal surface of this flake carrying scars from flake removals in opposing directions, with a small area of cortex remaining. The scraping edge, at the distal end is formed of broad invasive removals. The flint is of a dull orange-brown colour. The scraper has clearly suffered some post-depositional damage in recent times.
