Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead seal matrix, medieval. The matrix is circular, 23.93mm in diameter, and features a small loop on the reverse for suspension from a cord or thong. The matrix design is rudimentary, bearing a simple shield in the centre, with straight top and sides curving gently to a point. There is a roughly incised inscription around the perimeter. The inscription is worn and unclear, but the following can be discerned: [S']......?ILAVM O O E C O ... Unfortunately this is largely incomprehensible, though we may suggest that it names the seal's owner (the traditional form for seal inscriptio…

Object type: COIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early Roman coin: silver denarius, probably of Mark Antony as imperator, galley obverse, issued between 32 and 31 BC. This is an example of the 'legionary' coinage struck under Mark Antony to honour the legions and praetorian cohorts. Unfortunately the coin is very worn, and the reverse type, and any inscriptions are illegible, such that the details of the legion honoured on the coin are illegible.

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Iron Age/Early Roman brooch: a copper alloy Colchester type bow brooch. The brooch is simple and undecorated, and slightly deformed. Originally it would have been formed from a single piece of copper alloy, but the piece used to form the spring and pin is now lost. The head has been deformed, but retains its short crossbar and hook used for spring security. The bow is gently curved with an oval cross-section, and undecorated, while the catchplate is large, triangular, and undecorated.
