Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead seal matrix, medieval. The matrix is circular, 23.93mm in diameter, and features a small loop on the reverse for suspension from a cord or thong. The matrix design is rudimentary, bearing a simple shield in the centre, with straight top and sides curving gently to a point. There is a roughly incised inscription around the perimeter.
The inscription is worn and unclear, but the following can be discerned: [S']......?ILAVM O O E C O ... Unfortunately this is largely incomprehensible, though we may suggest that it names the seal's owner (the traditional form for seal inscriptio…

Medieval brooch: a figurative silver-gilt brooch, representing a man in combat with a lion. The man wears a knee-length tunic, decorated with tiny punches. He carries what appears to be a club in his right hand, and protects himself with a kite-shaped shield against his left shoulder. The front paws of the rampant lion are fixed into the shield. They stand on a foliate terminal, the man in an attitude of contrapposto, as he and the lion turn to observe the onlooker. The miniature brooch-pin extends from the groin of the lion to the right ankle of the adversary.

Medieval silver cross. Report by JP Robinson (Curator of Medieval Collections, British Museum) follows:
Small pendant cross with three roughly spherical terminals; the fourth arm of the cross terminates in a suspension loop. At the centre is a lozenge- shaped field, one side engraved with a crude cross and, on the other, with an indistinguishable motif. Both designs may once have been filled with niello.
The cross is silver and dates from the 13th century.

Medieval coin: a hammered silver penny of Henry III (AD1216-1272), voided long cross type V. According to the reverse legend, the coin was minted by Ricard, but the coin appears to be of Type Va, and none of the moneyers of this period were named Ricard. Moreover, the execution of the portrait is unusual, suggesting that this coin may be a contemporary copy.

A medieval brooch: the ring from a high-late medieval annular brooch. The brooch is formed from a single sheet of copper alloy, flat in section. The brooch has no pin slot, which suggests that dress material must have been pulled through the ring itself in order to hold the pin securely.
Decoration is unusual; rather than featuring the common stamped or punched decoration, it features a runic inscription, and irregular geometric motifs. The surface does not preserve evidence of tinning. This, together with the unusual (and presumably purely decorative) runes, make a medieval r…
