Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Bronze Age/ Early Iron Age copper alloy razor. The razor is crescet shaped and thicker along the back edge, tapering to a sharp cuting edge. The cutting edge is pitted through corrosion but otherwise damage is minimal. Two small circular holes (4.04mm diameter) at either end of the back of the razor are presumably for attaching the blade to some kind of handle. A good parallel for this object can be seen among the metal finds from Potterne in Wiltshire (Lawson, 2000, 188-9). This razor, with a convex cutting edge, two perforations and tapering cross section, is described as 'of a…

A stamped and hammered sheet copper alloy thimble of probable post-medieval date. The process of stamping and hammering has caused the side of the thimble to become folded over itself in one place. The thimble is 21.18mm high and the open end has a diameter of about 19.50mm. It weighs 5.39g. The hand-punched indentations are in the form of a spiral, and there is a small notch cut into the rim. This notch is discontinuous where the rim has worn away over the years. The spiral pattern of indentations suggests that the thimble was manufactured some time during the 16th century, possibly …

6 amorphous lumps of mortar found in assocation with a large quantity of Roman pottery. The mortar is probably Roman in date by association with the pottery and may derive from a domestic building. The material is very light in weight, with some pieces retaining the impression of organic material into which it was pressed. The fabric is coarse, buff coloured and contains frequent small angular inclusions, possibly of Carboniferous Limestone. Frequent small rounded voids probably represent air pockets. The pieces vary in size from 56.27mm x 37.06mm x 28.20mm (37.00g) to 46.79mm x 7.28m…
