Two small abraded sherds of late medieval sand tempered coarse ware pottery. Both have light orange oxidsed surfaces and margins, and a buff coloured core. The faintest trace of glaze survives on the external surfaces. One sherd has a well formed dark green lead glaze over grey slip, the other has amber glaze, not visible to the naked eye, over a buff wiped surface. The fabric is tempered with abundant well sorted and rounded quartz grains less than 0.1mm in diameter, and occasional small iron oxide. Their provenance and colour suggest an origin in the Donyatt Potteries and they are si…

A small abraded sherd of medieval coarse ware pottery. It has a light orange oxidsed surface and a grey core. The fabric is tempered with abundant poorly sorted rounded quartz grains measuring 0.5-1.0mm in diameter, and frequent angular chert, flint and limestone inclusions up to 4.5mm. The provenance and colour suggests an origin in the Donyatt Potteries and the fabrics are similar to Donyatt fabric type DPT 1 (13th century). However, the form suggests that this sherd was part of the neck of a jug, a form not common in Donyatt until the 14th century. Maximum dimension 33.28mm, weigh…

A small barbed and tanged flint arrowhead of early Bronze Age date. The arrowhead measures 24.40mm by 20.30mm by 4.60mm and weighs 1.48g. The arrowhead has been made from a flake, which was invasively retouched on both sides by pressure flaking. Its small size, light weight and small length to breath ratio place it as a Sutton type (Butler 2005, pp. 162-3). The light brownish-cream flint has a low-gloss patina

The pointed butt end of a Neolithic polished stone axe. The cutting end of the axe has snapped of in antiquity, possibly at a point of weakness visible in the break. The entire remaining fragment has a heavy patina of buff-brown colour with no recent damage precluding a view of the original colour of the flint. Because this is the butt end of the axe, the polishing has not penetrated into every flaked hollow leaving some neagtive flake scars. Butt ends were frequently left not fully polished, possibly to enable more secure hafting. The axe is of the thick butted type with a broad, len…

The broken terminal end of a Roman copper alloy patera (skillet) handle. The sides of the handle taper towards the break with a double grooved linear border on either side. The terminal of the handle is circular with a beaded border running around its circumference, the centre is pierced for suspension and also has a beaded rim around its edge. A good parallel for this handle is provided by a complete vessel from Gloucestershire recorded on the database as GLO-048BB1. The handle would originally have been cast as one with the vessel. However, there is evidence for re-use. the broken e…

Late Bronze Age/ Early Iron Age copper alloy razor. The razor is crescet shaped and thicker along the back edge, tapering to a sharp cuting edge. The cutting edge is pitted through corrosion but otherwise damage is minimal. Two small circular holes (4.04mm diameter) at either end of the back of the razor are presumably for attaching the blade to some kind of handle. A good parallel for this object can be seen among the metal finds from Potterne in Wiltshire (Lawson, 2000, 188-9). This razor, with a convex cutting edge, two perforations and tapering cross section, is described as 'of a…

Silver sixpence of William III (1696) made into a pendant and later a brooch. The original silver sixpence is in slightly worn condition. At the crown there is a small deposit of solder visible on both the obverse and reverse of the coin. This suggests that the solder fills a small hole that had previously served to suspend the coin around the owners neck as a pendant. At the same time that the suspension hole was filled, a hinged pin and loop were soldered to the reverse of the coin to convert it into a brooch. The pin is now missing. The style of hinge suggests that the conversion to…
