Object type: STRAP FITTING

County: Somerset

Post medieval cast copper alloy asymmetrical belt mount with two integral pointed lugs dating from the 17th century. Much of the original decoration may be masked through corrosion. However, the mount has a small trefoil knop at one end and a beaded knop at the other. The central body of the mount is 'tear-drop' shaped. One of the lugs has broken at the base. The mount is 29.73mm long, 16.24mm wide, 1.48mm thick and weighs 2.65g. A good parallel for this mount can be seen in Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (Read, 2001, 34, no.287).

Two Bronze Age scrapers made from re-worked patinated flakes. 1) A blueish-grey flint flake had developed a blueish-white patina before being re-worked with steep invasive re-touch around two edges during the Bronze Age to form a side and end scraper. D-shaped and measuring 41.13mm long, 44.00mm wide, 13.20mm thick and weighing 26.95g. 2) A Bronze Age end scraper fabricated from a flake that has been struck from a core which had already developed a greyish-white patina. D-shaped, measuring 33.84mm long, 36.05mm wide, 13.19mm thick and weighing 16.26g.

A Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age notched flint flake. The flint has a well formed creamy white patina with a large amount of cortex on the dorsal surface. The flake seems to have formed a notched shape through the primary flaking process. It has only been necessary to lightly re-work this to form a notched tool. The flake measures 54.34mm long, 47.42mm wide, 20.31mm thick and weighs 37.14g.

A possible Mesolithic-Early Bronze Age fabricator tool. The object is long and narrow, although relatively thick, with steep re-worked edges. The distal end has been finely worked into a curve, possibly to enable the careful application of pressure to the edges of flint flakes. The flint has a very well developed greyish white patina except at the proximal end where damage has revealed the dark-blue colour of the flint beneath. The tool measures 79.55mm long, 23.11mm wide at the distal end, tapering to 13.07mm wide at the proximal end, 12.55mm thick and weighs 32.64g.

Three Bronze Age flint awls of varying shapes and sizes. The largest is a triangular shaped flake that has been fabricated in such a way as to possibly form two workable points. The larger of the potential points has become broken at some time and may once have been c. 20mm longer than its present length of c. 30mm. This protrusion is 16.3mm wide and 12.0mm thick. The other point is set at approximately 90 degrees to the first and is much thinner and shorter. the third point of the triangle is unworked. The flint has a well developed white patina over buff-brown flint (revealed where …
