Two small pottery sherds weighing a collective total of 7.27g were examined under a binocular microscope (x12) and analysed in accordance with the guidelines of the Prehistoric Ceramics Research Group (PCRG 1997). Due to a lack of diagnostic features, a comparison with other ceramic assemblages is problematic and can only be made through the analysis of their fabric types.
A simple rounded rim form too small to be diagnostic was recovered with a very abraded bodysherd weighing only 1g. The rim fragment has been burnished on both surfaces and varies in colour from reduced grey black…

A large base sherd from a post-medieval jar, bowl or pan and dateable to between the 16th-18th centuries. The fabric is grey with oxidised orange patches on the external surface and contains a background of fine quartz grains and occasional brown iron oxide and fossil limestone. Similar to Donyatt fabrics DPT6-8. The internal surface is finger rilled and has a creamy white slip. The external surace has a patchy green glaze. Four small sherds of Roman Samian ware, dateable to the 2nd-3rd century AD.
1) A plain rim sherd with satin orange-red slip and orange fabric. The fabric is well fired, micaceous and contains occasional small white flecks. Probably made in the Lezoux region of central Gaul between c. 120 AD and the late 2nd Century. The sherd is 39.17mm long, 29.73mm wide, 5.04mm thick and weighs 6.76g

A decorated body sherd from a Roman Samian ware bowl, possibly dateable to 145-190 AD. The decoration is bounded at the top (ovolo) by an 'egg and tongue' frieze with possible panelled decoration below similar to examples from the Lezoux region on hemispherical bowls of Form 37 depicted in Webster (1996, 80-81, figs 60 & 62). These examples were dated from 145-190 AD. The fabric and slip is typical of Samian ware produced in the Lezoux region of central Gaul from 120 AD to the late 2nd century. A cast copper alloy foot from a medieval or post-medieval cooking vessel. The object has a D-shaped base but has broken at the point where the leg would have joined the foot. There is possiby the vestige of a central rib on the front side of the base of the leg at this point. It measures 48.13mm wide, 21.87mm deep, 22.31mm high and weighs 90.16g.

It has a D-shaped base and a flat front with a central vertical ridge which is set at 45 degrees. The foot would have been one of three on a cauldron, skillet or posnet.

A single small body sherd of post-medieval lead glazed earthenware dating from the 17th-18th century. The fabric is light orange in colour with very fine inclusions of rounded quartz (<0.1mm) and occasional iron oxide. The fabric is typical of pottery produced at Donyatt in South Somerset. The glaze is well formed and greenish-amber in colour. The sherd measures 35.07mm long, 24.14mm wide, 5.87mm thick and weighs 5.60g.

A single sherd of Roman coarse grey ware, possibly from the Savernake region of North Wiltshire and datable to 43-150 AD. The fabric is very coarse and is light grey on the exerior and buff/white on the interior in a sandwich effect. Inclusions comprise abundant rounded light grey grog (<1mm), frequent large brown/black iron ore (<6mm) and frequent sub-angular chalk/limestone (<1.5mm). It is handmade, with a lumpy interior finish. The sherd measures 35.36mm x 29.32mm x 8.17mm thick (9.58g).

Two sherds of Roman Samian pottery dating from c. 50-260 AD. The larger of the two sherds probably derives from the base of an open bowl with a prominent foot ring. The fabric is light pink in colour, coated in a thin light orange slip. Inclusions comprise moderate sub-angular chalk. There is no evidence of decoration and it is impossible to be sure of the precise form of the bowl. It is likely to have been made in the Trier region of Eastern Gaul between AD 120-260. A small base angle sherd from a medieval cooking pot dating from the 11th-12th century AD. The fabric is oxidised patchy orange-brown in colour with a grey internal slip. Inclusions consist of frequent fine rounded quartz (<0.5mm), moderate larger sub-rounded to sub-angular quartz (<2.5mm), occasional angular flint and sub-rounded oolitic limestone (<4mm). Probably of local origin and similar to some Ilchester fabrics. It measures 41.62mm long x 24.28mm wide x 5.78mm thick, and weighs 7.69g.
