A small and roughly shaped object of Greensand Chert with a flat underside worn smooth through use. The object was found in association with Roman domestic material and may be of Roman date. The object is sub-square in plan, with a raised point in the top which has been roughly shaped to allow it to be gripped by two fingers and a thumb. The grip is not good enough to enable the stone to be lifted and must have been used to polish objects lying flat on a surface. This is supported by the fact that the underside of the object is worn smooth and flat. The object is made from greensand Ch…

A possible scraper made from Greensand Chert dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age. The chert is orange in colour and, although the evidence for retouch around the edge is not conclusive, this type of stone is not native to the area in which it was found. It is likely that this is a crude scraper. The object measures 48.08mm x 41.58mm x 11.16mm and weighs 26.12g.

Broad period: ROMAN

A pair of oolitic limestone perforated objects probably used as fishing net weights. The perforations are probably too small for them to have functioned as loom weights and their shapes too irregular for them to have been spindle whorls. The underside of the objects have patterns of wear suggesting the string that passed through them was knotted underneath and attatched to a horizontal string for connection to other weights further along the net. The weights have been found in association with other Roman objects and may be of Roman date themselves. They measure 62.11 x 45.64 x 25.97…
