Roman military copper alloy horse harness fitting, probably of mid 2nd to 3rd century date The fitting comprises three surviving pieces, and would have had two further strap loops; the surviving components have a combined weight of 35.8g. The central cruciform component (36.6mm wide, 40.9mm long) has three loops composed of curved side arms, each terminating in a loop containing a copper alloy pin, of uncertain function, possibly decorative. Copper-alloy mini terret dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period. External diameter 19mm-20mm, internal diameter 10mm-11mm, thickness 3-4.5mm, maximum width of connecting bar 5mm, weight 4.6g. Thicker at pseudo-terminals. no evidence for wear facets; surface slightly pitted and abraded (probably corrosion and modern cleaning). Plano-convex in cross section i.e not cast in the round. A one piece casting. Ring slightly widens towards terminal. Not a symmetrical casting.

Late Iron Age to early Roman copper alloy terret of uncertain type, possibly a mini-terret and probably of 1st century BC to 1st century AD date The terret is broken into two pieces across the hoop and a small piece of the hoop has been lost. The hoop is of unusual form being of flat section with a thickness of 1.57mm and a width of 7.8mm. The two fragments of the terret have a combined weight of 8.3g. The hoop had a maximum external width of 38.8mm (23.9mm internal). No decoration is evident on either face of the hoop. There is the suggestion of wear facets on the interior of the hoop…

Late Iron Age bronze cheekpiece This is a complete cast bronze harness fitting, known as a toggle or cheekpiece. The artefact has a widened mid-section, 30-35mm long and 13mm wide and is waisted on each side, before flaring to form two slightly knobbed and rounded terminals. It is of slender and spindle-shaped form and has a transverse sub-rectangular shaped slot through the widened mid-section. Late Iron Age enamelled copper alloy harness cheekpiece (toggle or slide) of 1st century BC to 1st century AD date The cheekpiece is incomplete, missing one terminal and has a surviving length of 77.41mm (originally approximately 91mm) and weighs 38.5g. The surviving expanded terminal is circular with a diameter of 11.6mm.
