Roman copper alloy bow brooch fragment, of Wroxeter variant type dating to the 2nd century AD
The brooch is represented by the upper bow and the head only and has a surviving length of 21.70mm. The spring is present and is secured around a Polden Hill lug type arrangement. The wings have a width of 21.20mm, with expanded double-ribbed terminals, which are angled to the rear. The chord is secured at the head with a prominent lug. Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Polden Hill, (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 3, flat wing cap) type and dating to the late 1st to 2nd century AD The brooch is incomplete and is represented by the head only, with a surviving length of 15.94mm and weighing 3.7g. The spring mechanism was help with a Polden Hill lug type arrangement. Iron corrosion around the interior of the wings suggest the brooch had an iron axis bar.The wings are comparatively short with a width of 17.92mm and are angled to the rear. The hoop has an internal diameter of 14.1mm and is comparatively small, perhaps suggesting the ring was worn on the distal parts of the fingers or was a child's ring. The hoop is of D-shaped section with a thickness of near the base of 1.40mm. The hoop widens near the shoulders and expands to form linear moulded decoration on each side of the bezel. The object is a solid casting with an overall length of 69.06mm and weighing 161.5g. The piece is of oval section (maximum thickness 15.77mm) with straight parallel sides (29.26mm wide) and a rounded base. Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe fragment, c. 1,150 - 750BC This is a small fragment from the side of a socketed axe of uncertain type and has a maximum surviving length of 30.53mm and weighs 20.2g. The side has a loop (24.27mm long 7.41mm wide and 9.78mm deep). The loop is irregular and springs from immediately beneath (5.3mm) the rim and there is no evidence of a mouth moulding.
