Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The butt end of a polished flint-knapped axe of the Neolitich period. The object is basically trapezoidal in plan and a pointed oval in section. It has been knapped from a grey flint of brownish tinge that has large areas of milky-coloured patches (which are still the same type of flint, and not inclusions). This flint is consistent with other flint Neolithic artefacts from Northumberland, with a potentially similar axe made in the same flint found in the Cheviots and on display at the Museum of Antiquities in Newcastle. The butt has broken from the rest of the axehead, with th…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A highly tinned copper-alloy finger ring of post-Medieval date, probably 18-19th century. The finger ring has an undecorated hoop with a flat bezel. The bezel is roughly hexagonal in plan with an impression of corded decoration around the edges. The flat surface has a crude anchor carved into its face. The object was originally tinned to give it a silvery appearance. The light weight of the object and poor production quality suggests it was a low cost trinket rather than a valuable piece of jewellery.

A cast copper-alloy late Saxon stirrup strap mount, Williams Class A, type 11A, dating to the 11th century. The mount is triangular with a perforated trefoil terminal. The face of the mount is decorated with a lion or wolf facing right, with one front paw extended forward and its head pointing upwards and mouth open as if it is roaring or howling. Detail of the beast is exceptional, with ears, the main, and toes visible. The lower edge of the mount …

A cast copper-alloy disc, probably a disc brooch of the middle Anglo-Saxon period. Only the plate remains, consisting of a decorated copper-alloy disc and central stud made of silver. The silver stud is faceted into a cube with rounded corners, attached by a shank through the centre of the faceplate disc. The disc is decorated with a broad band of interlace in 8th-century style, and the face was gilded, though only a few small specks are visible. One edge of the disc has broken, leaving a relatively straight line for a break. Two circular perforations pierce the interlace band on oppo…

A cast copper-alloy stylised bird-head-and-neck mount, of unknown function and date, but probably post-Medieval. The object consists of a stylised bird's head with a ring-and-dot eye at the end of an S-shaped neck. The base of the neck has a circular hoop that leads to a flaring base that is circular in section. Emerging from the base is a corroded iron shank, approximately 6.5mm long. The shank was probably soldered into a hollow cavity in the mount, similar to the manner in which a screw or shank is fitted to a drawer handle. The function of the object is unknown. It could …

A cast copper-alloy rotary key of Medieval date. The bow is lozenge-shaped with knobs on three corners (35.45mm x 23.43mm). There is the swelling of a shoulder below the bow that merges into the stem of the key. The end of the stem is hollow to take a pin, but broken so that only a small triangular projection remains. This break was subsequently filed, and the remaining projection probably enabled the key to remain in use. The bit has two wards that together measure 15.25 x 26.75 x 5.97mm. Corrosion between the two wards bridges them. Eachward has a channel parallel to the shank appro…

Fragment of a copper alloy annular brooch of the Early Medieval period. The shape of the object suggests that it is approximately half of the original brooch, corrosion and wear having caused it to break. One break shows iron corrosion, suggesting that the brooch was damaged where the pin had caused corrosion. What remains of the brooch is also badly damaged. There are a number of splits in the metal of the band and the metal is slightly bent in places. Despite the breakage, it is possible to measure the diameter of the brooch, as it would have been complete, the diameter of…
