A copper-alloy umbonate brooch of the Roman period, c. 100-250. The brooch consists of a convex disc, with an extension forming a pair of lugs off one edge and a triangular extension opposite. The lugs would have taken a hinge pin, though this is now missing. The triangular extension would have provided a small foot and catchplate, though these too are missing. The convex disc is very worn, but retains traces of a circle of triangular fields around the outer circumference of the disc, filled with alternating red and blue enamel. This pattern probably was replicated toward the cent…

A cast copper-alloy fanbow brooch of the early Roman period, c. AD 50-100. The brooch is largely complete with a tubular head with a central split, taking the axel rod and hinge pin, both of which remain. Judging from corrosion at each end of the tubular arms/head that hold the axel, it is made of iron. The pin tapers to a point and ends at the base of the bow. The bow is nearly the full width of the head and runs down without tapering or flaring for approximately 10mm, then flares into a fan-shape. The surface of the bow is encrusted with a white-grey corrosion on its upper half,…
