Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead spindle whorl. No decoration. The perforation is 11 mm diameter. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 31.7 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a heavy material such as wool. The dating of unstratified spindle whorls is very difficult. However, Egan (1998, page 256) has argued that there was an apparent lack o…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Cast copper-alloy dagger with short, sturdy blade and four rivets remaining in the hilt plate. The organic hilt which would have been carved from bone or antler is lost. This dagger is a very rare find and only the second of this type from Cumbria (another Ballintober sword was part of the Ambleside hoard). It belongs to the Penard phase dating to the earliest phase of the Late Bronze Age 1300-1150 BC. Most British Ballintober swords come from the Thames Valley and a small number was found in South West England and South Wales. Until a sword of this type was found near Stranraer (G…

Cast copper alloy post-medieval (Georgian) sub-rectangular shoe buckle with rounded ends and a drilled frame for a separate spindle. The loop chape is broken although would have had two internal spikes and the pitchfork tongue is present. Shoe buckles increased in size after 1720 and after 1770 the fixing arrangements became more elaborate with a double looped chape, therefore it is probable that this example dates between 1720 and 1770.

Cast copper alloy mount. There is a central pellet with projecting petals from the centre towards a bordering concentric circle which in turn sits within the circular outer edge. The reverse of the object retains some of the leather due to two integral rivets being bent over the material. It also may have been covered in gold gilt, silver or tin to make the object appear as a decoration.…
