Cast lead spindle whorl. No decoration. The perforation is 11 mm diameter. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 31.7 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a heavy material such as wool. The dating of unstratified spindle whorls is very difficult. However, Egan (1998, page 256) has argued that there was an apparent lack o…

Cast copper alloy fragment of a Roman Class B Hod Hill type brooch. A typical lightweight example with rolled over head, found at the type-site, and doubtless brought in by a Roman at the time of the invasion. Three broad flutes placed vertically in the usual manner on the panel, and four cross ribs on the leg. The front was tinned but this remains trace. Closely dated to AD 43 to 51.

Cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch. A mature example of a trumpet brooch, early 2nd century AD in date. The bow has decoration at its middle consisting of upper and lower units sprouting leaves which enwrap the centre knob from above and below-known as the acanthus. The brooch would have had a chain loop inserted into the axial bar which is now missing. Decoration is applied to the upper and lower mid-bow flanges though this is fairly worn. The underface of the foot knob is recessed which Hattatt explains is to accommodate enamel (1982 page 107), although this is now missing.…

Denarius of Marcus Antonius minted in the east 32-31 BC. Augustus convinced the Roman world (wrongly) that Antonius' coins were made of base silver so examples like this remained in circulation until about AD 230. Catalogue number - 544, 21 in M.H.Crawford, 'Roman Republican Coinage', Cambridge 1974. Spink 457. Although this coin was struck in the late 30s BC, coins of its type stayed in circulation until the 3rd century AD when they are still being hoarded.

Cast lead stud/disc. Irregular in form. Front face demonstrates a central pellet in relief with a surrounding circular form. The reverse is plain. Possibly a miss-cast token. The site of recovery of the object could suggest however that this object is Roman in date and could therefore be a lead pot mend. These were used to hold broken vessels together before glue. A hole would be drilled into a broken vessel along the line of the break and then molten lead poured through which would harden on cooling (Cuddeford 1994 page 51).
