Two iron nails of uncertain date. The shafts have rectangular cross-sections and narrow away from the head, they are both broken before the terminals. The heads are both broken on most edges but it seems they would have been square/rectangular in plan originally. Length of shafts- 45.6mm and 39.92mm, width of heads- 30.25mm and 33.27mm

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman iron key which has been cast integrally. The key is solid throughout and appears complete. The bow is circular and leads to a square (in plan) section of the stem. This part of the stem is rectangular in section and is decorated by incised lines in the shape of an X across the surface of the stem. The stem then narrows to a more usual stem shape and is circular in section. The bit is square and has two equal clefts (or teeth), on the same side of the bit, which have now been filled in by corrosion.

Iron blade, probably a knife, most likely Post Medieval in date. The knife begins to curve around half way down the blade. At this point it also narrows (from 20.46mm to 7.57mm). It seems to have a rectangular cross section. It is very corroded and so little detail can be seen on it. Iron tools such as this take a similar form over many centuries and so stray finds such as this are difficult to date precisely. Due to corrosion levels in the area it is unlikely this is pre the Post Medieval period as it would probably not have survived.

Iron arrowhead which has broken off at the tang. The tang is hexagonal in section and is solid but has been broken at the end. The blade is complete and widens from the shaft before narrowing to a point. The point is rounded but it is not clear if this is due to wear or how it was made. Arrowheads are very hard to date precisely as it can be shown that certain types were in use in an early period but not that they weren't in use later on (Borg; 1991; 79)

Circular iron domed stud, with remains of broad circular-sectioned shank/pin on the reverse, now broken.
