County: Cheshire East

Lead alloy circular weight, probably from the Roman period. The weight has a rounded top and slightly concave back surface. On the front, in the lower half are the numbers 'IIII' which has most likely been cast or moulded in at the time of manufacture. The back has no decoration on but the surface is not smooth which could be due to use or poor casting. The edges are slightly raised and are irregular.

Circular lead weight which has the Roman numberals VIII inscribed in the top surface. In section the weight is domed. It is possible this is Roman due to the numerals but no typology has been made of weights from known contexts so it is difficult to assign a specific date.

Cast lead weight, possibly Roman- Medieval in date. It is conical in shape with a slightly rounded pointed terminal. There is a hole in the base. The surface is uneven and there are some marks where it has been scratched by the plough. There is no sign of an attachment loop so it is unlikely to have been used as a steelyard weight. Weights of this shape and size were used over many periods and so it it difficult to date them more precisely when found out of context.

Lead Roman steelyard weight. It is bi-conical in shape with a rounded iron attachment loop set in the top. The weight is not symmetrical and the surface is uneven, possibly through being poorly made, or possibly from damage.

Cast lead possible Roman weight. It is cylindrical, with a central iron core, which would have become a loop, but has now broken. Roman steelyward weights are usually biconical, not cylindrical but this example does have the iron core like the Roman ones, so it is possible it is Roman rather than Post Medieval.

Cast lead weight with an iron core. It is cylindrical in shape with a thin iron core protruding out the top which would have become a hook. Although it seems similar to Roman weights due to its iron core the shape is unusual so no specific date has been assigned.

Lead weight, possibly Roman in date. It is conical in shape with a rounded top and slightly irregular. The flat edge is the upper face and this has a central depression- possibly where an attachment loop once was. The surface is irregular all over due either to corrosion or poor casting of the weight. It was too heavy for my scales which go up to 200g. It has a length/height of 43.36mm and a diameter of 41.70mm.

The point of a Roman amphora made from reddish clay. It has broken very irregularly and not much remains, it is 63mm high. It is a darker red than usual and has either mica/quartz in the fabric. There is evidence for burning on one side of the fragment. It has a diameter of 62mm at the top but at the base of the point it narrows to 27mm.

Copper alloy tankard handle fragment from a Roman tankard in a Celtic style. It is a simple laurel leaf shape, with pointed ends. It has an incised line, making the shape of a smaller leaf, on the front face. It is curved and on the back has a slightly raised median ridge. This part of the handle would have attached to wider terminals to attach it to the tankard. There is some corrosion of the surface and in places the original surface has been lost giving a patchy appearance. These type of handles were seen from Iron Age through to the Roman period. This handle is most likely to be…

Rim sherd of a Roman vessel made of calcite gritted ware, probably Huntcliffe type, from the 4th century. The fabric is a dark grey with white calcite inclusions of varying size, some up to 5mm long. It is probably the rim from a large storage vessel and would have had a diameter of 230mm when complete.

Base of a Samian Ware cup, Form 27 or 33. Just over half of the base remains, with nothing of the sides of the vessel left. The interior of the base is slightly domed. The underside of the base has 2 grooved lines around its circumference. The footring is at a 45degree angle and although the sides are missing, they would have curved up quite sharply. There is a stamp on the base interior which reads MVXTVLLI'M indicating the makers name. It is an East Gaulish type. This name was found on a piece of Samian, Form 26, found at Holt in Denbighshire (Grimes,W. 1930. 124)
