Circular Cu alloy and enamel stud probably Roman, a parallel was found at South Shields Roman fort (Allason-Jones: 1984: 94) but could also date back to the Iron Age. It is a disc-headed stud with four sunken concentric circles which held enamel. Some of the enamel remains and is orange/red in colour. The shank is sqaure in section but only a very small part remains.

Object type: RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Silver-tin alloy strip which could be either a ring fragment or part of a strap end. The strip has been cast and appears to be a fragment of something. It could have been part of a ring which has been flattened or a decoration of a strapend (it is not heavy enough to be a strapend in itself). The strip is rectangular in plan and narrows slightly at one end. At the narrower end there is some decoration in relief. The decoration consists of a pointed rectangle. The long sides are normal but one end is pointed whilst at the other the lines curl round into two circles. This is possi…

Fragment of Roman Dragonesque brooch. Overall the piece is a sinuous drop shape of a zoomorphic design, dragonesque or birdlike. It is of an Iron Age British tradition, possibly 'celtic' design. There is a head, body and tail and will be described vertically from the head down. The head has two protrusions, one D-shaped, the other sub-triangular, perhaps a muzzle and ear respectively. The eye is in relief. Behind the eye is a circular perforation through which is hooked a piece of copper alloy wire. The body is rounded and has some decoration in the form of a curved line. The bo…

Cast conical copper alloy bell, probably of Roman date. It has a rounded integral suspension loop, now broken; the base of the bell is also broken and this can be seen by the irregular edges. Around the bottom rim is some decoration in the form of incised lines running around the circumference. There is no clapper present and it is not possible to see if one was once attached. Maximum diameter 27.63mm, height 27.88mm, weight 15.4g. Compare NCL-0BCA96 and YORYM-31959E, both of similar size and shape.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy mount of Roman date in the shape of a lion. The mount is incomplete, having broken just before the hind legs. It is made of solid copper alloy and has been cast. The face is facing forwards and shows the lion with his mouth open. The eyes, nose and details of the mane have been picked out. Behind the mane the mount narrows and is smooth on all surfaces. It widens again where it reaches the hind legs. The break here is uneven and appears old. This would have been a mount on some piece of furniture and is most likely to be Roman.

Copper alloy Roman umbonate brooch. A circular brooch with circular knops on the outer edge. There would have been 8, now only 3 are left. The 6 smaller knops are decorated with an inner circle. At the top and bottom were two larger knops, only one of which remains. This has a central circular perforation. The pin is on a hinge and remains but the catchplate is missing. The brooch is a hollow dome shape with a central peak. The front face is decorated. It is split into 16 segments each of which would have held enamel. Some still retain the yellow and blue enamel. This type of brooch m…

Cast copper alloy circular stud or mount, probably from furniture dating to the Roman period. It is domed in the centre surrounded by 2 raised concentric rings. On the back there was a shaft (rectangular in section) but this has broken off. The hole remains with some iron corrosion so it appears it was an iron shaft. The stud is mostly complete but it is slightly broken around some of the edges. Similar examples were found in excavations at Aldborough (Bishop; 1996; 64, nos. 401 and 406).

Copper alloy tankard handle fragment from a Roman tankard in a Celtic style. It is a simple laurel leaf shape, with pointed ends. It has an incised line, making the shape of a smaller leaf, on the front face. It is curved and on the back has a slightly raised median ridge. This part of the handle would have attached to wider terminals to attach it to the tankard. There is some corrosion of the surface and in places the original surface has been lost giving a patchy appearance. These type of handles were seen from Iron Age through to the Roman period. This handle is most likely to be…

Copper alloy Roman disc brooch, dating to the mid 1st century to the late 2nd century AD. It is very worn and now appears oval although it would have been round when made. The pin is missing but some of the hinge mechanism and catchplate remains. It is slightly convex on the front and is decorated with a 4 petalled flower. There is still some orangey/brown soil/corrosion particularly on the reverse.

Fragment of a copper alloy Roman dragonesque brooch. It is the central part of the brooch which remains. The decoration is in relief and does not appear to have had any enamel on it. It is probably a derivative of the early West Brigantian types with the central motif being made up of 2 trumpets meeting in a circle. This design is seen in early Celtic art. A similar example (although in an openwork design) can be seen in Hattatt (1982; 154-5).

Copper alloy as of Claudius dating to 41-42, RIC 95. Finders reference- 54 Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example is from the Lyon I, à la Grosse Tête, mint.
