Early Medieval, Viking, lead weight.
It is circular in plan and flat with a copper alloy plate set on the top face. The copper alloy setting looks like a gilt bronze Irish disc, possibly a stud with the lug removed. In the centre of this is a small circular red stone or perhaps glass. This glass forms the centre of the decoration with three swirls, almost peltate in design coming from the centre. There is then a raised outer rim. In the spaces between are small grooved lines.

Early Medieval lead weight, Viking in style; sub-circular in plan, and flat. It has glass set into the top face in a sub-circle. The glass is a light blue colour (although this may be due to deterioration) and has cracked, with a small fragment missing. The edges of the weight are rounded and the sides and bottom are plain and smooth with no marks or decoration.
Susan Youngs has seen an image of this item and kindly commented with some background information on this object type;
'It was usual for weights like this to have offcuts of some pretty but not valuable metalwork set in t…

Early Medieval lead weight, Viking in style, sub-circular in plan and domed. It has glass set into the centre of the top face in a sub-rectangular shape. The glass appears to be a fragment cut from a bracelet or bead. It is light blue with strands of red and white running through. The rest of the weight is plain and undecorated. On the sides and base are some small grooves, probably caused by the plough whilst in the ground.
There is a lead weight set with a glass bangle fragment from Dumbarton Rock, Strathclyde where the glass is the usual blue and white of Irish bangles. The red i…

Fragment of Roman pottery- body sherd, it has an orange fabric with an orange glaze on the outer face, similar to Samian. The outer surface is decorated with grooved lines, seemingly in a concentric circle pattern.
A comment from a member of the public highlighted that this is a fragment of Samian mortarium as the 3rd photograph shows a well worn surface with grit and the circles patten is the base. 'It could very well have been manufactured at Colchester during the 2nd century. It is very limited with distribution in eastern England.'
Reference no. 3010.

Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the strip of 92-94%, with a silver content of 5-6%, the remainder being copper; it weighs 1.57 grams.
The find consists of a length of narrow gold strip of triangular section with punched decoration of apex-to-apex triangles along the top ridge; it is broken at both ends; length, 32.5 mm. The decoration is very worn and abraded in places and there are cracks along the edges caused by distortion. The surface of the base is unworn, however, except for slight abrasion at one end. The strip i…

Cast lead owl standing 52mm high, probably dating to the 18/19th centuries. It is solid and has detail on both faces. The owl is depicted with large eyes, a hooked beak, pointed ears and detail on the wing, breast and tail being picked out.
It appears to have been attached to something as there is a broken base, measuring 12mm in diameter, at the end of the feet. Geoff Egan has said 'It is possible that it is part of the series of 'shy' toys, like a shy cock, set up to be knocked down by having sticks thrown at it'. If this is so the owl would have been on a larger base to enable it…

Copper alloy and enamel cast-cell stud from the late Iron Age- early Roman period.
It is circular in plan, flat on the top (enamelled face) and curved on the base. The base is plain and shows no obvious traces of attachment or remains of a stud. The front is split into three rows of three cells by raised lines of copper alloy. This gives a chequerboard pattern. The cells are filled with enamel, alternating red and yellow.
Chequerboard enamelling can be seen on other Iron Age objects such as harness equipment, for example two linch pins recorded on the PAS database as WMID-947693…
