Lead alloy (with some copper/bronze) weight or perhaps a gaming piece. It is circular in plan and has a rounded top. The decoration has been moulded and is on the upper (rounded) face only. The decoration is in the form of a stylised sun with rays emanating from a central circle. The bottom of the weight is smooth. Weights like this can date from the Iron Age period onwards and are very hard to date precisely. This weight probably dates to the Medieval period.

Lead alloy circular weight, probably from the Roman period. The weight has a rounded top and slightly concave back surface. On the front, in the lower half are the numbers 'IIII' which has most likely been cast or moulded in at the time of manufacture. The back has no decoration on but the surface is not smooth which could be due to use or poor casting. The edges are slightly raised and are irregular.

Lead token or weight. Circular in plan it is bun-shaped, giving a D-shape in cross section. The top surface is decorated with a 6 petalled flower. It is most likely to date to the Medieval or early Post-Medieval period. These types of weight have not been catalogued into a typology and so a more precise date cannot be given.

Lead trapezium shaped weight. The surfaces are not smooth- probably due to corrosion and wear. All the edges and corners are rounded. No typology has been made of weights so they are very difficult to date precisely. This is most likely to date to the Medieval or Post-Medieval periods.

Lead weight in the shape of an acorn. The weight appears complete but there is the remains of some iron corrosion at the wider end. Also at this end is a small hole. This could be the remains of an attachment. These weights have not been put into a typology so they are very hard to date precisely. This one probably dats to the Medieval or Post-Medieval periods.

Lead alloy weight, probably from the Medieval or Post-Medieval period. It is circular in plan with an uneven rim around the edges on both faces. There is some corrosion and the surfaces are not completely even. There has been no typology done for these weights so it is hard to assign them to a precise date.

Circular lead alloy weight probably from the Medieval period. The front of the weight has a circular depression in the centre, in which is an 'I'. The depression is surrounded by 2 incised circles which look as though they have been cast in at the time of making the weight. The 'I' appears to have been added later, by hand. The back of the weight is flat and has 2 lines scratched into it. It is likely these have been made through wear, or from the plough once the weight was in the ground. There are chips on the weight which are also likely to be plough damage. No typology has been m…

Circular lead weight from the Post-Medieval period. The weight is circular in plan and appears complete. It has a central sub-circular indentation on the top face and the surface is uneven. On the lower face there is a raised circle. Lead weights are difficult to date precisely as similar forms were used for hundreds of years. As such this weight has been given a general date of post-medieval.

Copper alloy circular trade weight from the post-medieval period, dating to the 17th or early 18th century. The base is flat and smooth. The top surface has a raised edge and a irregular hole has been gouged out, after the weight was made. There is also a central circle as decoration. The weight has 4 symbols punched into the top surface at 2, 5, 8 and 11 o'clock. These are- a cross, an 'A', a thistle and a possible acorn. Similar weights can be seen in Reads book (1995; p158-60).

Lead weight or spindle whorl. It is conical in shape but is not regular. There appears to be a hole all the way though although there is mud inside so this cannot be definite. On the base, around the hole is a ring slightly concave. This type of spindle whorl/weight with no decoration is very hard to date precisely as the same form was used for many centuries. This is most likely to be late Medieval/Post-medieval in date.

Cast lead weight in the shape of a rectangular bell. It has a small circular hole in the top, presumably for attachment. There is a rectangular hollow in the bottom. One of the curators at National Musuems saw this item and has given the following comments. This is possibly a lead lie, used by sailors. Wax would have been put into the hollow in the base, string tied to the attachment hole and the weight thrown over the side of the ship until it hit the bottom. It would have picked up a bit of the surface of the sea floor (sand/mud/shingle) to give some idea of conditions, or where …

Post-Medieval weight made from a lead alloy. It is sub-circular with a central circular perforation. On one face there are some marks which could either be writing or a pattern but it is not clear at all. These marks run all the way around the central hole. The function of this object is not totally clear but it is possibly a weight.
