Copper alloy finger ring. The ring is grooved to make it appear twisted on the outer edge of the hoop; where it lies on the finger it is flat. The bezel is octagonal in shape and has some incised decoration of a bird facing left in flight. Similar finger-rings tend to be identified as medieval; compare SOM-B5D177, KENT-D6261D and KENT-9D82DB (all dated to the late medieval period by the lettering on the bezel). The twisted hoop is thought to be a 15th century fashion (Egan in Griffiths et al 2007, 162)

There is also some decoration on the sides of the bezel. Each side has the same decoration, possibly plant-style. Copper alloy finger ring, probably medieval in date. The outside surface of the ring is decorated with lines which make a zig-zag pattern and a dot in each triangle. The inside surface is plain and smooth. It is D-shaped in section. The ring has been cast but the decoration appears to have been added after casting. Cast copper alloy finger rings were found in London dating to the medieval period (Egan and Pritchard; 1991; 331-2).

Gold posy ring from the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Treasure find- 2007-T156. The British Museum curator report- 'Small gold finger ring, slightly out of shape. Foliate design on the external surface and inscribed inside + DON + DAMI, followed by a sprig. Very slight traces of black enamel are visible on both the inner and outer faces.' Discussion: The style of the capital letter inscription compares well with other 16th and early 17th century rings in The British Museum's collection. The precious metal content of this finger ring fulfils the requirements of the …

Gold mourning ring dating to 1679. The inside band is inscribed 'Mrs Sarah Doding died 26th Nov 79'. The outside of the band is decorated with engraved designs of a poppy, a rose and a thistle with a black background (in enamel). The bezel consists of a skull and crossbones picked out in white enamel. It is in very good condition and all the detail is very clear. The design is significant of the times and represent certain things. The rose is for England, the thistle for Scotland (and the Stuarts) and the poppy for Holland.

Cast copper alloy finger ring from the late Medieval/Post Medieval period, c.1400-1700. The ring has a raised central part on the outside surface. This part of the ring is decorated with incised patterns. There are sections of vertical lines and sections of ovals. These sections are separated by a radiating sun. On either side of the raised central part is a beaded line before the raised smooth edge of the ring. Rings with incised lines have been dated to c.1400-1450 (Egan and Pritchard; 1991; 331/2). However the style of this ring is not quite the same so this suggests it is…

'Roman filigree gold ring. The hoop consists of a drawn strand of wire which has been twisted along its length, with a simple hook-and-loop catch formed by the wire terminals. The top of the ring is decorated with a thinner piece of wire formed into an applied quadruple spiral, the end of which has been twisted around one of the shoulders. Discussion. There are no exact parallels for this jewellery item. It has similarities with ear-rings and finger-rings with spiral decoration, a common Roman motif. Given the position of the decoration at the top of the hoop, it looks more likely …

Copper alloy finger ring probably from the early Medieval period. It has a lozengiform cross-section and tapering ends which overlap. The patina is dark brown and the surface is a little pitted. Finger-rings of similar size and shape, but with oval or circular cross-sections, have been recorded from Thetford (A. Goodall in Rogerson and Dallas 1984, fig. 110, 17-21), two (nos. 17 and 20) from 10th- or 11th-century contexts. Finger-rings with lozenge-shaped cross-sections are less well understood, and some at least may be quite modern in date

Gold post-Medieval mourning ring Date: early 18th century Description: D-shaped hoop, with skull on the bezel, showing traces of white enamel. There are also traces of black enamelling on the outside of the band, within the cross-hatching. On the inside is the inscription 'sic omnibus', with the maker's mark 'DA'. There are slight traces of black enamel within the lettering. Discussion: The d-shaped section is typical of the 17th and early-18th centuries. A Medieval finger-ring, set with a hexagonal sapphire in a bezel with a pinched border. The shoulders of the ring are divided into three bands. The raised central band is plain, with a rouletted border, which has worn smooth in places. The two side bands are engraved with flowers and leaves, and would originally have been enamelled. The back of the hoop is decorated with diagonal bands of alternate plain and punched decoration to give the effect of cabling. Cast copper alloy Medieval stirrup shaped finger ring. This type of ring is dated from the 12-13th century. The hoop is bent and measures 28mm by 19mm. The bezel is sub-circular and has a diameter of 10mm. It is a large bezel, projecting c.10mm upwards from the hoop. Inside the bezel is a red substance, possibly enamel on which there would have been a design. The design has been worn off and is no longer visible. Similar items can be seen in the Salisbury Museum catalogue, p.44, nos. 1 and 2. Although these examples are slightly more delicate and pointed.
