Roman bow brooch with some blue and orange enamel remaining. A derivative of a Wirral/ trumpet type bow brooch. This is an unusual variation and has some nice detail remaining. The bow is very pronounced and the body of the brooch is quite short. The main body of the brooch is complete although it has broken before the foot. The pin was on a spring of 4 turns and this still reamins although the pin is now missing. Some of the catchplate is present. The head plate takes the form of 3 steps which are enamelled with orange. There could have been a loop at the top as there is a broken edg…

Lead alloy circular weight, probably from the Roman period. The weight has a rounded top and slightly concave back surface. On the front, in the lower half are the numbers 'IIII' which has most likely been cast or moulded in at the time of manufacture. The back has no decoration on but the surface is not smooth which could be due to use or poor casting. The edges are slightly raised and are irregular.

Cast copper-alloy button and loop fastener of Wild's Class II/III ring-headed type (Wild; 1970; 138-9). The fastener is circular with moulded decoration at two points, opposite each other. There is a circle shaped decoration on the side near the loop. This consists of a ring of red enamel with a central dot of white enamel. The different colours are separated by raised ridges of copper alloy. The opposite decoration consists of a raised blob with linear ridges. Copper alloy object of uncertain function probably Roman in date. It is linear in form, flat on the front with a central raised line on the reverse. The top half is in the shape of a vase (seen in plan), it then narrows for the lower half. Both ends appear broken. The lower terminal is beginning to curve before it is broken. It is most likely some form of spear tip or fitting. A similar item was found at South Shields (p.216 no.740) and was described there as a rod. Photograph kindly supplied by finder

Copper alloy figurine in the form of a lizard or possibly a crocodile. It is very worn and appears to be broken/incomplete at both ends. It has a linear, slightly curved body with 4 short legs. One of the legs has broken but all seem worn. At one end the body tapers towards a point and it is assumed this is the tail. At the opposite end there is a widening to give a globular shape, this is assumed to be the head. No details such as eyes or mouth are visible due to wear. Along the top of the body there are indications of decoration including incised horizontal lines but wear makes…

Roman bow brooch, a hinged Continental Hod Hill variant with thick white metal coating dating to the first century AD. The white metal coating is only on the front (visible when worn) surfaces. It is possible it was meant to look like silver and so make the brooch seem more expensive. It is a hinged example, the pin is missing. The wings are short and quite angular. The first part of the bow is curved with a rectangular cross section. The front part is decorated with beaded lines down the edge and 2 circular hollows. At the end of this part of the bow is a moulded collar and then the …
