Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Roman penannular brooch, a Fowler Type A3, dating to c.100- 350 AD. The brooch itself is complete, although the pin is broken. The brooch has been squashed out of shape, probably whilst in the ground. It has golbular terminals, each with a single moulded collar. One of the terminals appears to have an extra bit of metal, it could be a mis-cast which was not cleaned up. The pin was formed by a strip of wire folded over the brooch, the loop remains but it has broken before it extends to the pin. Mackreth (2011) Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain : vo…

Strap fitting/ Mount Fragment of an enamelled cast copper alloy mount. This object appears to have been rectangular in plan when complete, although it may have formed part of a larger mount or fitting. The long edges of the rectangular plate have a lip projecting downwards. The object is broken along both of the shorter sides. The upper surface is decorated with inlaid enamel. This is laid out in a symmetrical herringbone pattern, on either side of a central dividing line. Traces of enamel remain. The mount has a rectangular-sectioned pin projecting on the reverse, in a perpendicular…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This fitting has a flat semi-circular 'button', with triangular central hole. This gives the impression of a rectangular panel along the base, with two angled leaf-shaped mouldings above it, forming the curve of the semi-circle. The loop (cast in one piece with the 'button') projects backwards from the rear of the semicircular plate, the shank starting from a point just above the triangular void. The loop is at an angle of around 30° to the 'button', in the same plane. The bot…

Copper alloy head of a Roman trumpet brooch, dating to c. 75- 175 AD. It is a large, and slightly unusual variety and unfortunately is quite corroded. It is a sprung type, with huge coils, four complete and two which are broken. The wire then threads through the coils. The central broken coil would have extended to the pin but that is now gone. The wire also runs below the spring, connected to both ends. The head almost immediately narrows away from the spring, which extends above the head. It is sub-traingular in plan, the broken end showing the bow would have had a circular cros…

Cast copper alloy Early Roman button and loop fastener. Tear-drop headed, dating to c. 50 -150 AD (according to Wild's typology, 1970). It is a slightly unusual type with a solid foot rather than a loop. The head is tear-drop shaped with a raised circular boss in the widest section. This appears to have enamel on originally and some traces of red (?) remain but the pattern is unclear. It appears to have been a central lozenge (of a dark colour) with four small ovals of red enamel around the outside. The foot projects from the base of the head, turning 90 degrees and widening, with…

Roman copper alloy expanding bracelet made of a single piece of circular sectioned wire, 3rd century in date. The ends of the wire are overlapped and then each is wrapped around the main loop of the bracelet giving an adjustable catch. The ends taper from the point they start being wrapped around, one end is wrapped around five times, the other three. It is slightly out of shape, measuring 93.54mm x 76.56mm in diameter. Crummy (1983) illustrates a very similar bracelet (page 39 no.1601) from a third century context in Colchester.

Cast lead possible Roman weight. It is cylindrical, with a central iron core, which would have become a loop, but has now broken. Roman steelyward weights are usually biconical, not cylindrical but this example does have the iron core like the Roman ones, so it is possible it is Roman rather than Post Medieval.
