Strap fitting/ Mount Copper alloy strap fitting, broadly cruciform in shape. The main body of the fitting is rectangular in plan, and flat in cross-section. This flat rectangular plate is decorated with an incised motif of a square within a concave-sided triangle at the top and bottom outer edge, which would probably originally have been enamelled. Running across this central panel, at right angles, is a raised moulding, terminating on either side in a pair of trumpet-headed terminals. This raised moulding forms the other axis of the cruciform fitting. A central rectangular strap b…

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. Strap fitting/ Mount Cast copper alloy strap fitting. This fitting takes the form of an open ring with an openwork triple-circle trefoil filling, flat in cross-section. In the centre of each of the three central circles is a circular indentation, with central pin remaining in two cases, and missing in the third. These may have been settings for studs. A rectangular strap bar is attached to the reverse of the ring, across the centre of the circular fitting. Cast copper alloy strap fitting, probably a strap junction, from the Post Medieval period. It is circular in plan (37.511m x 32.37mm) and slightly domed. . The upper surface is decorated by four sets of curved lines, in pairs, coming from the centre of the fitting, to the edge. There are also two circular perforations, one of which is now filled up with corrosion. It has two prongs on the reverse, which are quite 6.90mm wide, project 9.12mm down, and are sub-triangular in plan. These probably fitted onto the strap, or another plate.

Cast copper alloy fragment of a late Roman belt fitting of some sort. It is incomplete and so is difficult to tell exactly what it was part of. It has uneven broken edges on all four sides. The reverse is plain, on the front is a pattern of ring and dot motifs, seemingly running in diagonal lines, but they are not that uniform, and as only part of the piece remains it is difficult to define the exact pattern. It is sub-rectangular in plan, narrowing towards the top where it is curled over to form a hook. This hook is attached to a small circular ring which would have been attached to the rest of the piece. The main body of the hanger has two rivets in the centre, one above the other. The terminal is split with two rounded ends.

Fragment of a copper-alloy belt hanger of suggested late medieval date. Several examples of this category of artefact are recorded on the PAS datbase - see, for example, NMS-1EEA45, NMS-D99313 and IOW-7A0A93. There is also an unprovenanced example in the London Museum collection. It is suggested that they may have served to suspend a sword from a belt. The part which remains is the top of the piece. It is an up-turned L shape and is a heavily stylised zoomorphic head, which has a pronounced nose, deeply-grooved mouth and a flat underside. On the top of the head there are some raised l…

Copper alloy sword belt hanger from the 16/17th centuries. It is not complete and the main body has broken. It is foliate in shape and decoration. The main body is linear with trilobe floriate terminals. These would have had holes in, only one end still has this. There are 3 circular attachment loops from the lower edge of the main body. From these would have hung fittings in floriate design. One of the loops has broken. Of the other 2 fittings only the loop remains.

Copper alloy Victorian part of a British army belt closure. This consists of a circular plate with a rectangular bar attached on the back which has broken. The front of the circular plate has a lion above a crown. It would have been fitted (by a part now missing) to one end of a leather belt. It would have passed through a circular aperture on the other end of the belt to firmly lock the two ends together. The general style, and the shape of the crown, suggest that this is Victorian: perhaps 1860 - 1900.
