Silver foreign groat This is a silver double patard: Flanders, Charles the Rash of Burgundy (1467-77), struck at Bruges, 1467-74, mint-mark fleur-de-lys in centre of reverse. Ref: H Enno Van Gelder and M. Hoc, Les Monnaies des Pays-Bas Bourguignons et Espagnols 1434-1713 (Amsterdam 1960), p.20, no.23-3. These were the exact equivalent of the contemporary English groat (slightly heavier, but slightly baser silver) and were made legal tender in England and Wales in 1469 [from memory]. They turn up singly all over the place and in hoards down to the 1530s.

Four coins reported found on the site of a previous find of similar coins. These coins are all gold doblas of Peter or Pedro I, King of Castile ('Pedro the Cruel'), who reigned 1350-69. All the coins were struck at the Seville mint, the main mint of Castile. They are of good weight and are in generally good condition, with slight indications of wear, so they have seen some currency.
In my report on the previous coins found on the site (December 2005), I made the following comments:
'Gold coins of the 14th century are not frequent finds. We do know from documentary sources that for…

Lead token from the Post-Medieval period.
It is sub-circular with uneven edges. There is decoration/writing on both faces which is not central, possibly due to the irregular shape of the token.
One face has 12R above GH (or II) in the centre with a border of pellets. The bottom part of this design is off the token.
The other face has a shield with a cross inside, again surrounded by pellets. The design on this face is particularly off-centre, the right hand side part is missing.

Silver 8 real of Philip II of Spain dating to 1556-98. The flan is irregular in shape and is fairly thick. Due to the irregularity of the flan shape most of the legend is missing.
In the mid-16th century major silver deposits were found in South America, in 'Peru'. This relates to an area much larger than modern day Peru. Coins minted from here were called 'cobs' (cabo)- rather than producing a nice flan onto which the image was struck, cobs were simply a bar of silver cut into appropriate weights (2, 4, 8 reals) and they are obviously of odd, irregular shapes. This coin was most l…

German silver religious medallion, made for protection against plague (Pesttaler). It has verses from Numbers and St John on each side. It would have had an attachment loop at the top which has now broken off.
The devices are Old- and equated New-Tesament types.
Many different types of these medals survive, some of which have various 16th-century dates whilst others are not dated. This one most likely dates to the 16th century.

Lead circular token which is decorated on one side. the decoration is in relief and consists of a central circle with the outer edge split into cells. Inside each cell and the central circle is a raised dot. This type of artefact could be used as a gaming piece or a token or weight. It is very hard to date these as they used similar forms throughout the ages.

Cu alloy token or jetton, probably Medieval.
A thin circle of Cu alloy which is plain on one side and decorated on the other. One edge is bent.
The decoration is not very clear due to wear. It appears to be a central circle surrounded by four sub-sqaure shapes. Inside the circle and the other shapes is more decoration perhaps consisting of lines and dots.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Sub-circular lead token, probably medieval.
It has been mis-struck as the design is not central. It has writing on both sides which appears to be in the cyrillic alphabet which suggests it comes from around Russia.
It is probably a trader's token and this would explain how it was found in England as Hartlepool was a trading port.
The crossed keys design is used as the symbol of St. Peter, the gatekeeper of heaven for the Catholic faith. This could indicate that the company who made this token wanted to be associated with religion.
