Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the strip of 92-94%, with a silver content of 5-6%, the remainder being copper; it weighs 1.57 grams. The find consists of a length of narrow gold strip of triangular section with punched decoration of apex-to-apex triangles along the top ridge; it is broken at both ends; length, 32.5 mm. The decoration is very worn and abraded in places and there are cracks along the edges caused by distortion. The surface of the base is unworn, however, except for slight abrasion at one end. The strip i…

Copper alloy chape from an early early-medieval scabbard, probably of Frankish origin. It is cast in one piece and consists of a central vertical bar, D-shaped in cross-section, which ends at the top in a triangle with a pair of circles below, perhaps a stylised human face. Two lateral protrusions emerge from the centre of the bar and curve up and round to meet the corners of the triangle. These have transverse grooves across the junction with the bar and end in animal heads, resembling dolphins or birds, curling inwards around two small holes. There is some decoration in the form of …

Incomplete copper-alloy mount of sixth-century date, in the form of a fish, probably a shield-board mount. It is an elongated sub-oval shape, with a slightly flaring extension at one end for the tail of the fish. It has a central raised narrow rectangular panel running the length of the body. There are 4 small fins (surviving at varying lengths), one of which has been repaired by re-attaching it with a copper-alloy rivet. The tail is not complete and has a very uneven edge; it is thinner than the body, and so there is a small step between the two. There is a rivet on the back of the t…

Parts of an Anglo-Saxon sheet metal bowl made of copper alloy known as an eared cauldron, a Gotland cauldron or a Gotlandkessel. The bowl itself is intact from the rim until about half way down. The rim diameter is 196mm and the bowl is c.160mm deep. The handle is in two pieces and is made from iron. It measures 195mm in length, and most of it survives. Most of the base is missing and the edges are very uneven where it has broken. There are c.10 other fragments of the base. It has a globular body (shown by the small part of the base still present) with an everted rim. There is a singl…

Copper alloy Anglo-Saxon zoomorphic strap end, Thomas Class A, Type 5 dating to the 9/10th century. It is almost complete with only the very top being broken off. In plan it is a typical elongated oval shape with decoration on the front. The top is a split end to attach to the strap. In design it is like Thomas' class 5 with the central main panel decorated with an X. The lower terminal is slightly zoomorphic, representing the snout of an animal. The top of the strap end has an inverted V with a pellet on either side. Class 5 typically was inlaid with niello and silver wire. …

Fragment of a copper alloy Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch dating to the 5-6th centuries. Only some of the headplate and bow remains. The bow has a central raised ridge. Part of the pin attachment is still on the back of the headplate. Some gilding remains in the decoration of the headplate. This decorations consists of a central motif of ring and dot, possibly in a square (it is quite faint). Down the left hand side is a line of rectangles picked out with gilding. It is possible that this went all the way around but the brooch has broken.

Cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon strap distributor. This type of object dates from the 10/11th centuries. It consists of a central dome with 4 arms. The central dome is hollow on the reverse. Each arm ends in a lozenge shaped loop with a sub-circular central perforation. One of the arms has broken before the loop. It is roughly triangular in plan with a split terminal which is flatter than the rest of the strap end and has broken. On the front face there is decoration. On the flatter terminal are ring and dot. On the main body there are raised ridges. At the pointed terminal is another ring and dot motif. The back face is plain. Cast copper alloy Early Medieval kite headed pin. It has a lozenge shaped head with a circular perforation at the top. The shaft of the pin has a circular section and has broken before the end. Dr Kevin Leahy says 'These are of 10 - 11th century date and seem to be of ultimately Irish origin, although they are found in England due to the Vikings. This pin is slightly unusual as it has a hole though the head.'

Copper alloy styca from the Early Medieval period. It appears to be a derivative issue as it is mis-shapen and of poor metal. It is almost square shaped and most of the legend is not on the coin. These generally date to the mid-ninth century and have blundered obverse/reverse legends. This is possibly a derivative issue copying the coins of Redwulf (c. 844)

The tip of the strap end is characteristically decorated with the ‘plastic’ animal head terminal, which ends in a rounded tip. The eys and possible nose are the only facial features that are visible on this head. Above thehead is the start of the main body of the strp end. Copper alloy finger ring probably from the early Medieval period. It has a lozengiform cross-section and tapering ends which overlap. The patina is dark brown and the surface is a little pitted. Finger-rings of similar size and shape, but with oval or circular cross-sections, have been recorded from Thetford (A. Goodall in Rogerson and Dallas 1984, fig. 110, 17-21), two (nos. 17 and 20) from 10th- or 11th-century contexts. Finger-rings with lozenge-shaped cross-sections are less well understood, and some at least may be quite modern in date
