Lead weight, possibly Roman in date. It is conical in shape with a rounded top and slightly irregular. The flat edge is the upper face and this has a central depression- possibly where an attachment loop once was. The surface is irregular all over due either to corrosion or poor casting of the weight. It was too heavy for my scales which go up to 200g. It has a length/height of 43.36mm and a diameter of 41.70mm.

Lead weight, of uncertain date. It has a thick iron core which has a circular section and has started to corrode and lose its shape. The weight itself is conical in shape with a flat upper and lower edge. The lead is a dark grey which suggests it is not pure lead.

Cast lead weight from the late Medieval- Post Medieval period. It is shield shaped in plan with slightly rounded and uneven edges. There is an incised design on the front, a crude privy mark. It takes the form of a W inside the outline of a purse (of late 15th-early 15th century type) and is probably the owners mark.

Rectangular lead weight, Post Medieval in date. It is not quite a rectangle, one end being narrower. It has a grooved pattern on the front, probably meant to represent a scallop. It is possible this was used as a trade weight and that the scallop symbolises a certain weight.

Cast lead weight with a copper alloy plate on the upper face, Early Medieval in date. It is circular in plan and stands 17.23mm high. The base is lead and is plain. The decorative plate on the upper face is copper alloy. It has a raised central circle which has an incised six petalled flower in the centre. The outer edge is sextfoil in shape with a small lobe in between each lobe. Each lobe has a sub-circular perforation in its centre through which the lead of the base protrudes. Large shield shaped lead weight, late Medieval- Post-Medieval in date. It is most likely to be a trade weight. It has decoration in relief on the front and is flat on the reverse. The decoration consists of a raised shield shape leaving a lower border. In this there is a central fleur-de-lis with a design above which is slightly unclear but could be a cross with longer horizontal arms than vertical ones. It was too heavy for my scales whcih go up to 200g.

Cast lead weight of the late Medieval period. It is shield shaped with a decorated top surface and an undecorated lower surface. The outer perimeter of the lower surface is raised. The outer perimeter of the top surface is separated from the main body of the wieght by a groove, but in pressent condition it is somewhat damaged. The upper surface is decorated with a three tined crown above a fleur-de-lis.

Medieval Lead weight. It is globular- almost 'acorn' shaped and symmetrical. The main body of the weight is complete but the suspension loop is broken, only 3.5mm remains of the shank. There is an Fe core, some of which is still present. The base is sub-circular and indented.

The back is plain but has some scratch marks and chips probably due to wear. Its function is unclear as although it appears decorative there is no obvious method of attachment. It could possibly be a gaming token or a weight.

2 small rolls of lead sheet, unkown date and function. The upper one (in the image) has a weight of 11.3g, is 36.73mm long and has a diameter of 10.30mm. The lower one (in the image) has a weight of 11.4g, is 31.19mm long and has a diameter of 9.41mm. The Romans did have curse tablets which consisted of writing a curse on a small piece of lead sheet and then rolling it up before offering it to the gods, many have been found in the spring at Bath. As stray finds, out of context (and still rolled up) it is difficult to say whether these are Roman curse tablets or just pieces of…
