Cast copper alloy lid from a vessel, probably Iron Age or Roman in date.
It is semi-circular in plan with a raised lip along the straight edge. It is thinner at the outer edge of the curve. It is slightly curved at the edges. There is no decoration on either face.
Sally Worrell the Finds Advisor for Roman finds has seen an image of this item and comments that it is probably a vessel/strainer lid but that she has some reservations as it does not fit in with the usual examples.

Cast copper alloy handle from a Roman patera
It is hexagonal in section and hollow. The terminal is in the form of a dogs head. It has broken from the vessel and part remains. Where the handle meets the patera there is a raised ridge. Decoration on the bowl can be seen just before the break. It is incised and appears to be floriate in design although little remains.
The terminal is in the form of a dogs head. It has a collar consisting of a raised ring, flanked by a narrower ring on either side. The dog is shown with rounded ears and circular eyes. Both these parts are raised up…
