Copper alloy decorative mount from the Post-Medieval period. The mount is sub-oval with a rounded knop at each end. The front face is decorated, the back is plain. There is a border around the edge of punched crescents. Along the middle of the mount are 7 punched circles. There are some short lines over the surface, mostly coming from the edge towards the middle. On the back of the mount are 2 lugs, both of which have been bent. A similar example can be seen in Reads book (2001; 29/37; no.326).

Cast copper alloy Iron Age/Roman anthropomorphic vessel mount. It consists of a human head at the top of a slightly curved linear section (meant to represent the body). The head is round and has detailing picking out the hair and face. The hair is represented by grooved lines radiating from a central point on the top of the head. The eyes are round and hollow, the nose is raised and slightly bulbous. The mouth is a grooved line, almost giving the appearance it has its mouth open. The head is sat on a shape neck which then leads into the main section of the mount. This section ex…

Cast Cu alloy mount of medieval date. The mount is circular in shape and has part of the stud remaining on the back. It is cast integrally and has some red and white enamel still present. The front is decorated and enamelled. In the centre is a six pointed star, each triangle contains 3 lozenges arranged in a trefoil shape, the rest of the triangle is filled by white enamel. In the centre of the triangle is the head of either a gorgon or lion facing forwards. The rest of the mount face is decorated by red enamel but the pattern is unclear due to wear. Due to the size of the mount it w…

Copper alloy early Post Medieval mount in the shape of a crescent moon and star. It consists of a main sub circular body with two studs of the reverse. At the top is a 7 pointed star in the centre and there is an openwork section below this which extends to half way down the circle. It has a circular loop at the bottom from which hangs an incomplete item which has a loop to attach it to the main body and a stud on the reverse. It has four spikes come out from below the loop. The belt fitting has a small piece of leather attached to the reverse of the main body, caught between the t…

Cast copper alloy belt fitting, probably a sword hanger, from the Late Medieval period. It is linear in form and appears complete apart from the rivets which are missing. It has a thin, rounded terminal extension. It then widens to the main section which is rectangular in plan with a curved hollow profile. There is a circular perforation at the top and bottom of this section which would have held rivets to attach the fitting to the belt. Below the upper hole is a raised horizontal band as decoration. This section ends by narrowing into a hook which curves back in front of the fitti…

Copper-alloy probable mount of probable medieval date, possibly a 'binding strip' In its present form it is S-shaped. It appears to be a mount with three symmetrical arms, one of which retains a circular tab with tapering knop. The tab has a circular perforation now filled in with corrosion but it is probable that it was hollow, which probably took a nail, pin, or rivet for attachment. The end of one arm has broken, leaving an open semi-circle of the terminal. The majority of the third arm is missing. It can be compared with binding strips illustrated in Goodall (2012, 139; fig.…

Copper alloy asymmetrical convex mount, probably from horse harness. It has two integral rivets on the back for attachement. The mount is a sub-triangular plate with two steps in the sides and a quatrefoil or lozenge-shaped protrusion at the top. It is very corroded all over and has started to lose some of its original surface. Similar examples can be seen in Read 1995, 183-4; they date broadly to the 17th century.

Cast copper alloy mount in the form of Medusa's face from the Roman period. It is a very fine example with lots of detail remaining. The mount is sub-circular in plan and is hollow. The reverse is now filled in with iron corrosion with a central square shaft of the stud used to attach the mount. The face is complete with all features still visible. The hair is designed to represent the snakes which made up Medusa's hair. Her face has a beaded line around the edge.

Strap fitting/ Mount Fragment of a cast copper alloy mount, possibly related to harness. This object appears to be broken, and perhaps also mis-cast, making the original form difficult to discern. The body of the mount is rectangular, with a two-part rectangular strap bar on the underside. A projecting segment which may have been an extension on the side of the rectangular body of the mount is now broken. On the upper side of the rectangular plate, at each end, project two circular-sectioned studs with circular heads. Parallels: No direct parallels have been found for the form …

Strap fitting/ Mount Fragment of an enamelled cast copper alloy mount. This object appears to have been rectangular in plan when complete, although it may have formed part of a larger mount or fitting. The long edges of the rectangular plate have a lip projecting downwards. The object is broken along both of the shorter sides. The upper surface is decorated with inlaid enamel. This is laid out in a symmetrical herringbone pattern, on either side of a central dividing line. Traces of enamel remain. The mount has a rectangular-sectioned pin projecting on the reverse, in a perpendicular…

Button and loop fastener or strap terminal Possibly a fragment of a mis-cast copper alloy button and loop fastener or strap terminal. This object consists of a single flat leaf-shaped panel, with a central raised circular moulding, concave in the centre, with central pip, possibly a setting for a stud. At one end, the remains of what may have been a second leaf-shaped panel remain, but this part of the object is broken and mis-cast. Parallels: This object is very similar to a fragmentary example of the 'button' from find no. 10, and may perhaps have been part of a pair to this…

A circular, cast copper alloy mount, with enamelling on the front face. The general style, decorative content and use of enamel suggests that it was made at the Limoges school in France, probably in the 12th or 13th century AD. As with many of the Limoges pieces, it seems likely that it would have decorated a reliquary (religious casket) or a Christian book. The mount is circular and the front is convex. The design in champlevé enamel is a trefoil, with a circle in the centre containing a quatrefoil. The quatrefoil has red enamel at the centre, then a band of dark blue, one of gr…

Copper alloy silvered mount from a Limoges cross or casket. A hollow-backed half-round standing figure. The head extends out of the body; the features are crudely defined with circular hollows for the eyes (which may have had insets in) and a raised sub-triangle for a nose. The mouth may have been a grooved line but this is not clear. The body has raised lines leaving cells which would have been filled with enamel. On this example they are quite abstract but from other more realistic parallels it is clear that they are meant to represent a robe. The upper half of the body is separat…

Copper alloy decorative mount, late Medieval to Post Medieval in date. It is lozengiform in plan with scalloped edges. At the base is the start of an extension, this would have probably led to a loop or hook to attach the mount. The front is decorated in relief with three lines, starting at the base and spreading out, one straight up, and one to either side. The reverse is flat and plain.

Cast copper alloy Medieval box or casket mount, dating from the 13-15th century. It is incomplete, L-shaped in plan with two sections which are connected by a hinge piece. The surface was gilded, small fragments of this now remain on the horizontal section. The mount is flat on the inside/reverse, where it would have attached to the casket/box. On the inside horizontal section there is a circular hole where a rivet would have been, and the remains of a small bent rivet. The outside/front of the mount is decorated with relief decoration. On the hoirzontal section the decoration i…

Cast copper alloy vessel mount, in the shape of the goddess Minerva's head. It is hard to date this type of object precisely but it is most likely to be from the 1st-3rd centuries AD. The mount has a partialy hollow reverse, presumably where it would have attached to the vessel. It appears complete and is only slightly worn. The front of the mount is the face of Minerva. She is helmetted with the typical crest on top. Hair can be seen protruding from the helmet above the eyes and down the side of the face. The eyes are elliptical and recessed. The mouth is worn but appears to be op…
