Strap fitting/ Mount Fragment of an enamelled cast copper alloy mount. This object appears to have been rectangular in plan when complete, although it may have formed part of a larger mount or fitting. The long edges of the rectangular plate have a lip projecting downwards. The object is broken along both of the shorter sides. The upper surface is decorated with inlaid enamel. This is laid out in a symmetrical herringbone pattern, on either side of a central dividing line. Traces of enamel remain. The mount has a rectangular-sectioned pin projecting on the reverse, in a perpendicular…

A copper-alloy decorative strap or belt mount, Roman and circa 3rd century in date and most likely to be associated with the military. Similar decorative late Roman mounts of a similar style, although with a different openwork designs have been found in Germany (Oldenstein 1976, tafel 69, 902-907). This mount is sub-circular in shape measuring 30mm in length and 23mm in width. It is open work. The frame is made from 2 coinjoined, tapering arms which form the sub-circular shape. At the narrow ends each arm has a circular knob. In the centre there is a s-shaped element which joins the…

Cast copper alloy vessel mount, in the shape of the goddess Minerva's head. It is hard to date this type of object precisely but it is most likely to be from the 1st-3rd centuries AD. The mount has a partialy hollow reverse, presumably where it would have attached to the vessel. It appears complete and is only slightly worn. The front of the mount is the face of Minerva. She is helmetted with the typical crest on top. Hair can be seen protruding from the helmet above the eyes and down the side of the face. The eyes are elliptical and recessed. The mouth is worn but appears to be op…

Cast copper alloy mount in the shape of a boar's head. Roman in date, it is hollow-cast. There are traces of 2 legs at the front which have now broken off. A very similar example was found in Aldborough which still has its front legs (Bishop; 1996; 93, no.589). There is no obvious method of attachment other than the hollow casting of the animal's body. There is moulded decoration which picks out the crest, eyes, nostrils and cheeks. The top of the face takes the form of an elongated lozenge shaped moulding. Adam Gwilt from National Museums, Wales has seen this and comments that …

Copper alloy mount of Roman date in the shape of a lion. The mount is incomplete, having broken just before the hind legs. It is made of solid copper alloy and has been cast. The face is facing forwards and shows the lion with his mouth open. The eyes, nose and details of the mane have been picked out. Behind the mane the mount narrows and is smooth on all surfaces. It widens again where it reaches the hind legs. The break here is uneven and appears old. This would have been a mount on some piece of furniture and is most likely to be Roman.
