Cast copper alloy ring, incised lines decorating one face. The ring has a sqaure-ish cross section with both faces being flat. It is not a finger ring. This type of ring is hard to date as it is a very simple design which has been used for a long time. Due to the patina of the ring (an even dark green) it is most likely to be Late-Medieval in date.

Cast copper alloy circular ring, possibly Roman in date. Plain ring with a rectangular cross section. It is corroded and the edges are slightly worn. There are lozenge shaped grooves decorating the outside face of the ring. It could have been a finger ring for a child as it is very small in diameter. Equally it could have been used on a belt or other fitting. The patina of this ring suggests it could be Roman. The edges of the ring are a light green which indicates corrosion. The main surface is a brown colour due to mud. Rings of this plain form are hard to date and assign a function …

Silver finger ring. This find went through the Treasure process but was declared not treasure. Description: The ring consists of a hoop of plano-convex section which expands at the front to form a slightly ovoid bezel. The latter is punch-incised with three letters, possibly to be read in reverse order as the last on the right appears to be a reversed 'G'. The first letter is a 'T' and the central one is a vertical line with a slash through it, forming a rune-like character, although it is uncertain if it was intended to represent a rune as such, or some other letter. On the righ…

Roman silver finger-ring of keeled type, the hoop widening to triangular angular shoulders which are decorated by grooved lines running away from the bezel. The ring is mounted with a prominent oval bezel consisting of a blue glass (?) intaglio encased within a box setting. The intaglio portrays Mars kneeling left, holding a shield in front of him and a spear across his body. It is a very fine engraving and the folds in his tunic as well as gathering at his waist can be seen. He has a fold of material draped over his arm. He possibly has a laurel wreath on his head. Roman gold finger-ring of keeled type, the D-sectioned hoop widening to sub-triangular angular shoulders with a triangular notch on each edge close to the bezel. Two incised grooves run from where the shoulder meets the bezel to where the shoulder meets the loop on both shoulders, this creates a triangular panel on each shoulder. The central panel of this section is raised to the height of the shoulder edges. The ring has been squashed so it is no longer circular but it is complete. The ring is mounted with a prominent oval bezel consisting of a blue stone intaglio encased within…

A medieval gold posy ring made from a flat band 4.31mm wide and 0.77mm thick. It is engraved with a black-letter inscription in French which reads Jatens tenir (I wait to hold [you]). The inscription starts (and/or ends) with a group of three-pointed motifs, other motifs which are difficult to identify (from the photographs) and a sun with wavy rays. The words are separated by a five-petalled flower on a stem with leaves The finger-ring dates from the fifteenth century. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as T…

Copper alloy late Medieval signet ring. It has a circular bezel with the letter I in the centre. On either side is a palm, above is a crown. The bezel is set out of the hoop. The hoop is sub-circular, it has been mis-shapen. There are some remains of gilding on the ring, it would have been gilded all over but most of this has worn off. 15th century in date it is very similar to ones in the collections of the Salisbury Museum, nos. 17 and 18 (part 1; Saunders, E and P; 1991; 42/46).

Treasure number- 2008 T716. Roman silver finger ring, complete, with an oval hoop which expands and swells to a flattened bezel set with an oval, orangey-red carnelian intaglio. The intaglio depicts Bonus Eventus, who is shown standing facing with his head left, his outstretched left hand holding a patera, and his right arm down by his side ears of corn. The figure stands on an engraved line to represent the earth. The inside of the hoop is concreted with traces of soil. Discussion: Bonus Eventus, the male equivalent of Ceres and therefore associated with agriculture, is a p…

Roman silver finger ring of semi-circular section and oval profile which swells to a wide flattened bezel, set with an ovoid orange-red carnelian intaglio flush with the bezel; this is engraved with a bird standing left holding a morsel of food in its beak. Scientific examination shows that the ring appears to be hollow but may originally have had a copper core plated thickly with silver which explains its mostly dull grey appearance.

Gold posy ring from the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Treasure find- 2007-T156. The British Museum curator report- 'Small gold finger ring, slightly out of shape. Foliate design on the external surface and inscribed inside + DON + DAMI, followed by a sprig. Very slight traces of black enamel are visible on both the inner and outer faces.' Silver finger ring with carnelian intaglio. Guiraud Type 2c/d dating from the 1st century to the 1st half of the 3rd century AD. The hoop is oval and flares gently to an expanded bezel set with an oval intaglio. The intaglio is best viewed with its long axis running side to side. It has some slight damage on the right-hand side which may obscure some of the design, but is engraved with an eagle standing left, with an olive branch on the left.

Copper alloy finger ring. The ring is grooved to make it appear twisted on the outer edge of the hoop; where it lies on the finger it is flat. The bezel is octagonal in shape and has some incised decoration of a bird facing left in flight. Similar finger-rings tend to be identified as medieval; compare SOM-B5D177, KENT-D6261D and KENT-9D82DB (all dated to the late medieval period by the lettering on the bezel). The twisted hoop is thought to be a 15th century fashion (Egan in Griffiths et al 2007, 162)

A Medieval finger-ring, set with a hexagonal sapphire in a bezel with a pinched border. The shoulders of the ring are divided into three bands. The raised central band is plain, with a rouletted border, which has worn smooth in places. The two side bands are engraved with flowers and leaves, and would originally have been enamelled. The back of the hoop is decorated with diagonal bands of alternate plain and punched decoration to give the effect of cabling. Inside the hoop is the French inscription JOYE SANZ FYN (Joy without end) The hoop is not circular, but resembles a disten…
