Circular lead weight or gaming piece. Circular possible weight or gaming piece which has a raised edge. It is decorated by 3 concentric circles, the central one being filled in. The back is plain but has some scratch marks and chips probably due to wear. Its function is unclear as although it appears decorative there is no obvious method of attachment. It could possibly be a gaming token or a weight.

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hartlepool
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Sub-circular lead token, probably medieval. It has been mis-struck as the design is not central. It has writing on both sides which appears to be in the cyrillic alphabet which suggests it comes from around Russia. It is probably a trader's token and this would explain how it was found in England as Hartlepool was a trading port. The crossed keys design is used as the symbol of St. Peter, the gatekeeper of heaven for the Catholic faith. This could indicate that the company who made this token wanted to be associated with religion.

Lead bi-conical spindle whorl with a central circular perforation. It is circular in plan although there are some bits of corrosion attached to the edges. It is worn so the decoration cannot be seen very clearly. It has been decorated on both sides in relief with zig-zag lines and dots. Spindle whorls are hard to date precisely as they were used for a long period of time. Therefore this find has been dated broadly to the Medieval period.
