Cast bronze side-looped, socketed spearhead from the early Middle Bronze Age, c.1500-1150 BC.
Mostly complete with the tip missing and worn blade edges. The blade would have been leaf-shaped and has a raised midrib on both sides running from top to bottom. The socket widens towards the end. It has two small side-loops about half way down. These are rectangular and have been cast integrally with the spear. The socket is slightly out of shape with the edge being uneven, however it is mostly circular in section and hollow. Nothing of the wooden shaft remains.
Side-looped spearheads are …

Cast copper alloy ring, incised lines decorating one face. The ring has a sqaure-ish cross section with both faces being flat. It is not a finger ring. This type of ring is hard to date as it is a very simple design which has been used for a long time. Due to the patina of the ring (an even dark green) it is most likely to be Late-Medieval in date.

Cast copper alloy circular ring, possibly Roman in date. Plain ring with a rectangular cross section. It is corroded and the edges are slightly worn. There are lozenge shaped grooves decorating the outside face of the ring. It could have been a finger ring for a child as it is very small in diameter. Equally it could have been used on a belt or other fitting. The patina of this ring suggests it could be Roman. The edges of the ring are a light green which indicates corrosion. The main surface is a brown colour due to mud. Rings of this plain form are hard to date and assign a function …

Decade rings were used for the rosary- to repeat the Ave and Paternoster prayers. They were introduced in the 10th century but became more popular at times of religious tension, in particular the 16th century onwards.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of an early Bronze Age flat axe, c. 2500- 1700 BC in date.
It is the blade and the lower part of the shaft which remains. It is corroded all over the surface and this has caused pitting. The blade edge is uneven with bits missing and worn away. The axe has a rectangular cross-section, narrowing towards the blade which splays out from the shaft. The blade measures 46.13mm in width, the shaft 27.97mm.

Blade fragment of a Bronze Age axe, c.2300 BC- 800 BC.
The blade edge is curved, and appears complete. It has broken before the shaft, having a rectangular cross-section at the broken edge where it is thickening. The axe has a dark brown patina which is slightly patchy due to corrosion.
As so little remains it is not possible to pin it down to a certain type of axe, or a more specific period within the Bronze Age.

Blade fragment of a copper alloy axe head, probably Bronze Age in date. The blade is very rounded and wide. It still retains a sharp cutting edge. The patina is a fairly even light brown and there does not appear to be any invasive corrosion. It has broken unevenly before the main body of the axe. Its size and shape suggest it is from the early or mid-Bronze Age.

Bronze Age flanged axe, from the Aylesford and Arreton periods, c. 1700-1500 BC.
The handle is slightly narrower at the butt than where it meets the blade (the central point has a width of 31.09mm). The side flanges are low and are at their highest in the central point of the handle. At this central point the handle is also thickest, with a small raised horizontal ridge just visible. The blade is semi-circular and at its widest point measures 84.91mm wide. It still narrows to a thin cutting edge all along the blade edge.
It is almost complete with just the butt and blade edges being …

Cast copper alloy miniature axe Viking in date. It has a broken attachment loop at the top which would have been perpendicular to the axe. The axe is a broad bladed example. James Graham-Campbell, a Viking expert has seen a photograph of this object and says that 'the form is unusual as it is of the late broad-bladed type, whereas other Viking examples, e.g. of amber, are of earlier, narrower forms'. However it would be unusual to get a pagan item from a later date and so he is happy to date this item as broadly Viking.

Copper alloy fragment, probably from a Medieval chafing dish.
It is a W shape in plan with both ends being broken, they would probably have extended upwards to form a loop, this would then have attached onto the dish. The fragment is square in cross-section with slightly bevelled edges and file marks can be seen on the surface.
Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table.
