Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire East
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy seal matrix from the Medieval period. It is vessica shaped in plan and is D-shaped in cross section being slightly domed on the reverse. The legend around the outside possibly reads ' S' PETRE (?D') (?WVE(ci?)RM)'. The image in the centre is unclear but may be a candle. On the reverse there is quite a bit of corrosion and some of the surface is missing.

Copper alloy figurine in the form of a lizard or possibly a crocodile. It is very worn and appears to be broken/incomplete at both ends. It has a linear, slightly curved body with 4 short legs. One of the legs has broken but all seem worn. At one end the body tapers towards a point and it is assumed this is the tail. At the opposite end there is a widening to give a globular shape, this is assumed to be the head. No details such as eyes or mouth are visible due to wear. Along the top of the body there are indications of decoration including incised horizontal lines but wear makes…

Cast copper alloy umbonate bridle boss from the 17th century. It is hexagonal in plan with a raised central circular boss which is 11mm high. It is hollow on the reverse. The flat outside edge is decorated with raised circles. There would have been 2 rivets to hold the boss in place, one at the top and one at the bottom, but these have broken away, leaving holes. The front of the boss is decorated with blue, white and red enamel in alternating sub-circular shapes. Some of the enamel is now missing so the pattern is incomplete. Similar items can be seen in Read, 1995, p. 149-151, nos. …

Copper alloy Roman disc brooch, 2nd century in date. The brooch appears to be made of a circular disc with a raised section set on top. The back of the brooch is flat, the front is decorated. The decoration consists of a central circular concave boss which could have been filled with either enamel or a stone but is now empty. Around this is a beaded circle, surrounded by a raised edge. There is a small flat lip on the very outside edge which has a twisted rope design. This is an unusual example, it does not seem to have been cast as the top, raised section is hollow. The brooch is cir…

Copper alloy as of Claudius (41-54), minted in Rome, 41-50 AD. RIC I, p.128, no.97. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example could not be classified to a particular mint, nor as a native copy.
