I have examined a group of 16 coins reported found at Stapleford, Lincolnshire All of the coins are silver and 14 of them are official English coins, which will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. Two of the coins are foreign in origin, but are of types found in English contexts quite frequently in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. One is a double patard of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, a coin that from 1469 circulated in England officially as equal to a groat. This was had a fineness of c. 80% silver. Copper-alloy Roman oval plate brooch with a large carnelian intaglio inset, probably 3rd century. The intaglio is slightly convex and the gem has a length of 24.25mm. The intaglio depictis Hercules being offered a wreath by Victory. It is deeply cut and very detailed. Hercules stands fully to the front and is nude apart from the nebris over his left arm and the crown-type head wear. He is resting his right hand on a club. Knapped, ground and polished axe head of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). This axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval (humped) in cross section. In plan the sides of the axe taper from the widest point at the cutting edge to a relatively narrow rounded butt. Width at widest- 55.04mm, at narrowest- 21.30mm. It is mostly complete with just a few chips missing from the edges. It has a white/cream patina and where the surface has chipped away a dark grey stone can be seen. Base of a Samian ware cup, probably a Dragendorff 33 form, dating to c.50- 230 AD. Less than half of the base remains with some of the stand. A small fragment of the wall of the cup is left. Stamped on the inside with a makers mark 'MAXA..' This could be the mark MAXAXIVS, a stamp known to have have been used on pottery produced in Heiligenberg, now in Germany, between 100 and 140 AD. However it is not certain that this is what the stamp says.

Cast copper alloy dolphin bow brooch dating from c. 75-175 AD. It is complete, with the only damage being a slightly bent pin. The wings are cylindrical, holding the axis bar with a central slot for the hinged pin. The bow has a triangular cross section with the point being the centre of the front. The bow is plain and narrows to a point at the foot. The catchplate is complete.

Cast copper alloy Roman nail cleaner with an exuberantly decorated neck. Mostly complete, the lower end is broken leaving just one of the two points. It has a circular loop on the smae plane as the shaft. Between the loop and shaft is a cylindrical collar with grooved lines at the top and bottom and diagonal lines as decoration. Below the collar is a bulbous section which is not symmetrical. The shaft then narrows to a rectangular shape. From about half way down there is a central linear groove leading to the terminal. Cast copper alloy Iron Age/Roman anthropomorphic vessel mount. It consists of a human head at the top of a slightly curved linear section (meant to represent the body). The head is round and has detailing picking out the hair and face. The hair is represented by grooved lines radiating from a central point on the top of the head. Silver foreign groat This is a silver double patard: Flanders, Charles the Rash of Burgundy (1467-77), struck at Bruges, 1467-74, mint-mark fleur-de-lys in centre of reverse. Ref: H Enno Van Gelder and M. Hoc, Les Monnaies des Pays-Bas Bourguignons et Espagnols 1434-1713 (Amsterdam 1960), p.20, no.23-3. These were the exact equivalent of the contemporary English groat (slightly heavier, but slightly baser silver) and were made legal tender in England and Wales in 1469 [from memory]. They turn up singly all over the place and in hoards down to the 1530s.
