Gold posy ring from the late 16th to early 17th centuries. Treasure find- 2007-T156. The British Museum curator report- 'Small gold finger ring, slightly out of shape. Foliate design on the external surface and inscribed inside + DON + DAMI, followed by a sprig. Very slight traces of black enamel are visible on both the inner and outer faces.' Discussion: The style of the capital letter inscription compares well with other 16th and early 17th century rings in The British Museum's collection. The precious metal content of this finger ring fulfils the requirements of the …

Gold mourning ring dating to 1679. The inside band is inscribed 'Mrs Sarah Doding died 26th Nov 79'. The outside of the band is decorated with engraved designs of a poppy, a rose and a thistle with a black background (in enamel). The bezel consists of a skull and crossbones picked out in white enamel. It is in very good condition and all the detail is very clear. The design is significant of the times and represent certain things. The rose is for England, the thistle for Scotland (and the Stuarts) and the poppy for Holland.

'Roman filigree gold ring. The hoop consists of a drawn strand of wire which has been twisted along its length, with a simple hook-and-loop catch formed by the wire terminals. The top of the ring is decorated with a thinner piece of wire formed into an applied quadruple spiral, the end of which has been twisted around one of the shoulders. Discussion. There are no exact parallels for this jewellery item. It has similarities with ear-rings and finger-rings with spiral decoration, a common Roman motif. Given the position of the decoration at the top of the hoop, it looks more likely …

Gold post-Medieval mourning ring Date: early 18th century Description: D-shaped hoop, with skull on the bezel, showing traces of white enamel. There are also traces of black enamelling on the outside of the band, within the cross-hatching. On the inside is the inscription 'sic omnibus', with the maker's mark 'DA'. There are slight traces of black enamel within the lettering. Discussion: The d-shaped section is typical of the 17th and early-18th centuries. The maker's mark is very likely to be that of Isaac Davenport, who registered this mark as a smallworker in 1705 (Grimwade, no. 434…

Four coins reported found on the site of a previous find of similar coins. These coins are all gold doblas of Peter or Pedro I, King of Castile ('Pedro the Cruel'), who reigned 1350-69. All the coins were struck at the Seville mint, the main mint of Castile. They are of good weight and are in generally good condition, with slight indications of wear, so they have seen some currency. In my report on the previous coins found on the site (December 2005), I made the following comments: 'Gold coins of the 14th century are not frequent finds. We do know from documentary sources that for…

A Medieval finger-ring, set with a hexagonal sapphire in a bezel with a pinched border. The shoulders of the ring are divided into three bands. The raised central band is plain, with a rouletted border, which has worn smooth in places. The two side bands are engraved with flowers and leaves, and would originally have been enamelled. The back of the hoop is decorated with diagonal bands of alternate plain and punched decoration to give the effect of cabling. Inside the hoop is the French inscription JOYE SANZ FYN (Joy without end) The hoop is not circular, but resembles a disten…

Gold Post Medieval finger ring. This thin plain band is inscribed inside in lower case script: 'In thee my choice I doe reioyce'. This is a type that continues well into the 18th century and beyond. In the absence of any maker's mark or other dateable feature there is no evidence to confirm that this is pre-1708. Judy Rudoe

Gold Post Medieval mourning ring dating to 1727. It is inscribed in the inside of the ring with 'Mary Normandy ob 9 Jan 1727 cet 55' The outside of the ring is highly decorated with black enamel. Firstly there is a skeleton. Below the skeleton is a crossed shovel and pick. Next there is an hour glass. All of these pictures symbolise death and the end of time/life. Below this is an open book with the words 'MEMENTO MORI' written on the 2 pages. This means a memento of death. There is an X below the word MORI which just appears to be to fill space.

Gold Post-Medieval finger ring from the late 17th/ 18th centuries. The ring is complete and in good condition. It is decorated on the outside and has an inscription on the inside. The exterior decoration consists of raised diagonal ridges which have punched annulets along them in a irregular manner. The inscription inside is either in French or latin but it is hard to work out. The lettering is very stylised and appears to read ' ..... le bleu'.
