Object type: SPUR
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy fragment from a Post-Medieval rowel spur. It is L-shaped in plan with only the spur neck and spur box remaining. The spur neck is circular in section and widens in the middle. At the junction between the neck and the box the fragment bends 90 degrees. There is a circular knob on the corner. The spur box consists of 2 arms running parallel to each other, ending in a circular terminal. This circle has a central hole through which a bar would have run to hold the rowel in place.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy Medieval buckle plate which would have had an integral frame but it has broken. The plate is generally linear and expands at either end into moulded circular ends. In cross- section it is D-shaped with the back being flat. The plate is broken just at the junction with the frame which would have been oval. This type of buckle has been dated from the early 13th century onwards. It is possible that they were used for spurs but this has not been proved. Similar examples have been found at Meols on the Wirral (Egan, Philpott and Griffiths; 2007; 103-5).

Cast bronze button from the Roman period. The button is sub-triangular in plan formed from three integral cast sub-circular bosses conjoined in an irregular trefoil. Each separate boss is domed with a concave depression on the back. On the rear of the button is a cast vertical loop. A similar button is described in Lindsay Allason-Jones' and Roger Miket's 'Catalogue of small finds from South Shields Roman fort,' 1984: pp 130-131, figure 3.744. This button is dated to the Roman period. However, they suggest that this type of button might be a development of Wild's (Button and lo…

Copper alloy Roman trumpet-headed brooch. The main body of the brooch is complete but the pin and its mechanism are missing and the catchplate is broken (although part of it still remains). The pin was held on an axis bar in a recess between two lugs, one of which is broken, behind the large trumpet head. A small headloop was cast integrally with the head but this has broken before the loop with only the tab remaining. The bow has a triple moulding close to the rounded trumpet head. The moulding is rounded on the front and flat at the back, showing just as grooves. The foot is small a…
