Copper alloy Roman umbonate brooch. A circular brooch with circular knops on the outer edge. There would have been 8, now only 3 are left. The 6 smaller knops are decorated with an inner circle. At the top and bottom were two larger knops, only one of which remains. This has a central circular perforation. The pin is on a hinge and remains but the catchplate is missing. The brooch is a hollow dome shape with a central peak. The front face is decorated. It is split into 16 segments each of which would have held enamel. Some still retain the yellow and blue enamel. Broad period: ROMAN

Cast copper alloy circular stud or mount, probably from furniture dating to the Roman period. It is domed in the centre surrounded by 2 raised concentric rings. On the back there was a shaft (rectangular in section) but this has broken off. The hole remains with some iron corrosion so it appears it was an iron shaft. The stud is mostly complete but it is slightly broken around some of the edges. Similar examples were found in excavations at Aldborough (Bishop; 1996; 64, nos. 401 and 406).

Copper alloy tankard handle fragment from a Roman tankard in a Celtic style. It is a simple laurel leaf shape, with pointed ends. It has an incised line, making the shape of a smaller leaf, on the front face. It is curved and on the back has a slightly raised median ridge. This part of the handle would have attached to wider terminals to attach it to the tankard. There is some corrosion of the surface and in places the original surface has been lost giving a patchy appearance. These type of handles were seen from Iron Age through to the Roman period. This handle is most likely to be…

Copper alloy styca from the Early Medieval period. It appears to be a derivative issue as it is mis-shapen and of poor metal. It is almost square shaped and most of the legend is not on the coin. These generally date to the mid-ninth century and have blundered obverse/reverse legends. This is possibly a derivative issue copying the coins of Redwulf (c. 844)

Copper alloy Roman disc brooch, dating to the mid 1st century to the late 2nd century AD. It is very worn and now appears oval although it would have been round when made. The pin is missing but some of the hinge mechanism and catchplate remains. It is slightly convex on the front and is decorated with a 4 petalled flower. There is still some orangey/brown soil/corrosion particularly on the reverse.

Fragment of a copper alloy Roman dragonesque brooch. It is the central part of the brooch which remains. The decoration is in relief and does not appear to have had any enamel on it. It is probably a derivative of the early West Brigantian types with the central motif being made up of 2 trumpets meeting in a circle. This design is seen in early Celtic art. A similar example (although in an openwork design) can be seen in Hattatt (1982; 154-5).

Circular lead token, Medieval/ Post-Medieval in date. The letters AMEN have been scratched into one of the surfaces, they are crude in style. They appear to have been added to the token/weight after it was cast. Lead tokens like this could be used for weights or as gaming pieces, they are common metal detector finds and are difficult to date accurately.
