Copper alloy dolphin type late Roman to early Medieval buckle of Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA. It is a broadhead open loop buckle. There are 2 dolphins with low crests, meeting in the middle holding a globe/egg shape in the space between their mouths. The dolphin bodies sweep round to form an open loop. At the end are small attachment loops (set perpendicular) for attaching the buckle to the buckle plate. On this buckle only one of the loops remain, the other has broken off.

Unusual zoomorphic Medieval buckle, 12th century in date. It is an unusual shape, widening from the bar at the base to a rounded hollow shape at the top. It is almost a wedge shape but is rounded rather than square at the wider end. The top part is where the decoration is, with an unusual zoomorphic face. The strap bar is circular in section and has a raised section in the middle. There was probably another strap bar which ran parallel to this one which has now broken off. The decoration appears to have been cast integrally to the buckle. The opening of the buckle is…

Silver annular buckle from the Medieval period. The pin is made from a strip of silver folded over the frame and narrowed at the end where it sits on the frame. It is free moving around the frame. c.f. examples on p. 57-8 which were dated to 1400-1450 from excavations in London (Egan and Pritchard; 1991) This was found in 1985, when the Treasure Trove Law was in existence. Under that law this item would not be classed as treasure as it is a stray loss, not deposited with an intent to recover.

Cast copper alloy D-shaped buckle of 11th- or 12th-century date. The pin is missing. The loop is free of decoration except for where it meets the bar; there is no groove for a pin rest. There are two animal heads, one on either side of the bar. The heads are facing into the bar, perhaps holding it in their mouths. The heads have little detail apart from a dot eye, and it is unclear what type of animal they are. Thickness of loop is 5.88mm, thickness of bar is 2.32mm. Although this was originally identified as a late Roman buckle, with reference to Laycock and Marshall, http://www.l…

Copper alloy buckle plate from the Medieval period. A cast copper alloy buckle plate which is rectangular in plan and incomplete. There is some gilt remaining on the front face which would have been there as decoration. On the front face there is an incised line running around the circumference. Inside the line there are 4 circluar perforations, one in each corner. At the top of the mount is a semi-circle cut out, where the attachment probably used to be. There is a small rectangular fragment of this remaining but the rest has gone. The back is free from decoration. There is …

Cast copper alloy Early Medieval buckle dating to c. 900- 1200 AD. It is D-shaped in plan with a narrowed strap bar. The terminals of the loop are zoomorphic in form with the strap bar connecting two heads of animals. These are stylised animals seen on various objects from this period and could be dogs/dragons/dolphins, it is difficult to see. They have a rounded head with inset eyes and an elongated snout. The strap bar is worn and very narrow at one point, the pin is missing. The buckle has an even patina of reddish-brown.
