Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy circular seal matrix from the 13th or 14th century. It is a personal seal with a central design of a male bust facing right (on the impression). The man has a hairstyle of a tonsure which would suggest he is a monk. Although the seal is in good condition, the legend around the outside is worn in places and thus not particularly clear even when an impression is made. The first S and part of the final word are particularly unclear. It appears to read +S': CLIC: DE GRAIA[PSIN]T (Seal of the Clerk of Gray...) with the final word probably a place-name. It is unusual, though, t…

Silver annular buckle from the Medieval period. The pin is made from a strip of silver folded over the frame and narrowed at the end where it sits on the frame. It is free moving around the frame. c.f. examples on p. 57-8 which were dated to 1400-1450 from excavations in London (Egan and Pritchard; 1991) This was found in 1985, when the Treasure Trove Law was in existence. Under that law this item would not be classed as treasure as it is a stray loss, not deposited with an intent to recover.

Cast copper alloy miniature anvil. Most likely made as a toy and dating to the 19th century. It appears complete and is a typical anvil shape. There is a central rectangular body with a conical spike from the 2 short sides at the top. Geoff Egan has seen a photograph of this object and says it is possible it was used for very fine metalwork but that there should be a more substantial integral means of fixture.

Unusual zoomorphic Medieval buckle, 12th century in date. It is an unusual shape, widening from the bar at the base to a rounded hollow shape at the top. It is almost a wedge shape but is rounded rather than square at the wider end. The top part is where the decoration is, with an unusual zoomorphic face. The strap bar is circular in section and has a raised section in the middle. There was probably another strap bar which ran parallel to this one which has now broken off. The decoration appears to have been cast integrally to the buckle. The opening of the buckle is…

Cast copper alloy shield shaped harness pendant from the 14th century. It has a circular attachment loop set perpendicular at the top of the pendant. The front is decorated with a central chevron and 3 fleur-de-lis, one below the chevron, the other 2 above, one on each side. The pendant would have been gilded, there is some remnants of this on the reverse. It is possible the front design could have been picked out in enamel but there is nothing left to show this.

Cast copper alloy link part from a purse frame bar, Late Medieval in date. This is from the centre of the frame, the rest has broken. The middle is a cube with a central circular hole. A swivelling loop would have gone through this hole. On either side of the cube is the beginning of the bar. It has a circular cross section. There is a narrower section in the middle. The ends are circular discs from which the narrower bar would have extended out of.
